Glass and Light

Light has a different relationship with glass than it does with plastic. There is probably a very good explanation from physicists that involve the diffraction of light through glass vs plastic. I'm fascinated by a painters ability to show glass. Somehow they manage to create something that is simultaneously there and not there. Whether it is illuminated by direct sun, indirect daylight, or backlit at night, glass has a special character compared with its ersatz distant cousin known as plastic.

The shadow cast by the remnants of the wine and the stem of the glass at an outdoor captured my interest. Something off-putting about the smudged glass and crushed butts.

Interesting and rather unusual set of photos. All are nice, but my favorite is #4. In that one I love the rich color and warm light.

Thanks for commenting. LJ has many outdoor cafes. One could spend several days taking photos. Will post some others in a later post. The warmth of the light coming through the glass and whiskey suggests a dram or two on a chilly autumn night.

What a terrific theme for a series, frjack! This would make a fascinating topic for a share thread and certainly a fun idea for challenge-to-self next time I'm somewhere other than orchards and sagebrush

I agree that #1 has a definite "ewwww" factor. The backlit shots are very appealing, as is the composition of the last.

Thanks. In a day or so I'll post a series of the sidewalk cafes here. Rarely is there an eating establishment that doesn't have at least one table outdoors. Obviously for the use of smokers but Slovenians like to be outside, even in weather that would send your average American for the thermostat dial.

Thanks. Glass blocks do interesting things with light. Happy daylight savings day! Central Europe switches in two weeks.

It sure doesn't feel like daylight savings, frjack! We're snow-covered with another foot and a half coming tomorrow! And we're moving up to Souderton Sat.! Yikes!

You've expressed my thoughts exactly on painters' ability to show glass. I dabble in oils/acrylics/watercolors and it is a hard concept. Your words that its "simultaneously there and not there" is what I have not been able to put in words. The glasses with the rose petals is worth study. The smudges on the wine glass in #1 seem apropos with the cig butts. Both well used and a bit unclean.

Thanks for commenting. I spent part of yesterday taking similar shots. I've been fascinated for years by the Flemish and Dutch masters ability to depict glass. I'll stick with a camera.

Thank you. It's fascinating that the whiskey is a Japanese brand. Apparently they are given the Scots a run for their money in the single malt whiskey business. Gorgeous color.
