Pan Tilt head for Ravelli APLT4 (no ball)

Will most pan tilt heads work with the Ravelli APLT4?

I an doing jewelry photography, some of it macro, and I need a way to stabilize the camera so that, once I set it in place, it won't move when I let go of it.

Am I looking at the wrong solution? Maybe I just have bad technique.

I have the stock ball and pan head that came with the tripod and am having a heck of a time.

You can tell I am a newby and probably will be for quite some time.

The problem is the $25 tripod you have selected. /From what I can see, there is no way to remove the integrated pan-tilt head, and the tripod is inherently unstable. It should be for the price. You shouldn't expect it to be stable for any sort of high magnification closeup work. Add $300 to what you paid for the tripod and head, and that will get you a decent stable tripod. Then add another $150 for a decent ball head and you are going to be in business.

A good pan-tilt head will cost at least than much if not more.

No! Poor excuse, but I was in a hurry to sign off and didn’t look up the tripod. Sorry, it might be OK for a flash, but keep your camera away from it!

A geared head like the Manfroto 410 Jr. or 405 would work great for you. I use both almost daily.

They haven't gotten wobbly yet, David?

Anyway, it's a moot point - the Ravelli does not seem to have the ability to remove the integrated pan/tilt head. It also doesn't make any sense to consider a $225 or a $460 head for a $25 tripod. Kinda like putting racing slicks on a Smart Car.

I used the wrong tripod model in my original message.

The correct tripod is the Vanguard Alta Pro 264AB 100.

Sorry for the confusion. Apparently there is no way to delete or edit the original post. A bit frustrating.

Ok, that's better. But not much. The ball head on that tripod is, as you already know, not great. But it is a great match for the tripod, and fine for really lightweight cameras. You can go out and spend $150 or more on a ball head, and though it will be more stable, you still have to contend with the tripod's lack of stability, especially at high magnifications. You can choose to do this incrementally, or just bit the bullet and get an adequate tripod and head and do it just once. It's too expensive to try and sneak up on the right tripod - just do it. If you get something good, you can always sell it at a small loss if you decide you don't want it anymore, so it is totally worth while. If you buy junk you may end up having to donate it or just toss it.

Welp, I finally figured out that the SBH-100 Ball Head on my tripod is actually pretty darned good once I figured out how to tight the plate. Duh! The amount of sag I get on a close up is VERY minimal.

A few naysayers about this tripod, but I find it to be heavy (in a good way), and very stable for my purposes, which are mainly indoor jewelry in a light box, short music videos at my house concerts and at the open mic I co-host.

I suppose it's possible that, at some point, I may find that this setup doesn't meet my needs, but for now it does.
