Took my new Nikon D500 out today to shoot whatever moved. Found this little guy who was eager to put my new camera to the test. Shot with a 80-400 Nikkor lens F5.6, 1/1250, ISO 110 (auto).

They're beautiful little birds. I haven't figured out whether we get Allen's or Rufous Sided, but whichever they are, they're only passing through for a day or two. There's never much time to get good shots. Wish mine had turned out as well as yours.
Thanks Vicki. I'm fortunate that I can always count on two to three hummers being at this particular spot, mostly year round. They aren't too intimidated by humans and I can get reasonably close. A fast shutter really helps too.

We have at least 15 Anna's show up for a last feeding of the day. I've had them land on my hands when I put out freshly filled feeders. One of these days I'll have my husband try to get a shot. It's quite a thrill to have a couple of them land on your fingers. They're almost weightless yet you can feel their nails and their tiny feet touch down.
I've got an Anna and an Allen hitting the feeders in the backyard. The Anna is now nesting in our backyard Podocarpus . Hopefully, in a couple of weeks we'll see one or two little heads popping up. We had two chicks last year. Fun to watch and photograph.
Well done DJD. I would have thought 1/1250 would have been fast enough to freeze wing action but I see some blur. What would you suggest to freeze wing blur, 1/2000?
I would think 1/2000 would work. Hopefully there would be enough light without having to resort to too high an ISO. In hindsight I should have tweaked mine up a bit while the little guy was in a cooperative mood. Thanks for the comments.

Try using a flash. (or two) These were taken at 1/500 with flash on camera and one external flash. Set the camera flash mode to FP then you can use faster shutter speeds. Good captures.
