Colorado National Monument (locals refer to as The Monument) has spectacular canyons cut deep into sandstone, and graniteâgneissâschist, rock formations. This is high country desert on the Colorado Plateau, with pinion and juniper forests. It hosts a wide range of wildlife, including red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, ravens, jays, desert bighorn sheep, coyotes, and (yes) rattlesnakes. The feature attraction is Monument Canyon. It runs the width of the park and includes rock formations such as Independence Monument, the Kissing Couple, and Coke Ovens. If, perchance, youâve not visited The Monument, then the next time you are in Grand Junction at the very least take the scenic rim drive through the park. I think you will enjoy it.
