Hi ya'all. Going to lake Como region for a week long walking tour. Debating as to taking my 7dll with 100-400 and wide angle or buy a bridge camera probably Panasonic fz1000. Hate to give up my better gear and I will be carrying it in camera backpack with a couple lighter items. Go with heavier tried and true or lighter bridge. Thanks, stefrie
go with lighter and you will be wishing you had the proper gear with you every time you see a fantastic view which you will many many times
I go to Italy frequently and sometimes take three cameras and what a pain THAT is. You think you will need all this stuff and then worry about what you actually take out each day. For instance, last October when I was there I took a Nikon D7000, Fuji X-Pro1 and the amazing little Nikon Coolpix A. When I came home and started uploading them, I realised that for much of the time I had use the Coolpix with it's fixed wide lens. IDepending on what you are expecting to photograph, I wouldn't bother with the long lens. With a decent sensor and shorter lens you will be able to pull out any detail you ish with selective enlargement. Don't let gear get in the way of actually enjoying what you see!
Como is beautiful. Plan a lunch at Gato Nero – the view is killer. Take a taxi up the mountain. Wide angle is a must. Train in to Milano and don't miss the Domo and the cathedral.

I would take the 7D and put as many lenses in your backpack as possible fit!!!
I don't know when you are going but remember is could be very hot in that part of Italy so I would travel light if I were you.

Thanks to all
Yeah - now it's clear as mud!
Sounds like maybe you should not bring the big heavy telephoto and stick with a 16-35mm wide angle and a 24-105.

Travel lite, travel right.
Lot of very steep hills to climb so light is definitely better. The only reason to bring a long lens is to shoot from the ferry boats. Bellagio and Varenna are gorgeous at night or late evening so I would suggest bringing a tripod or your best fast lens / low ISO combo. There is a short path from the ferry terminal in Varenna heading south along the shore towards the center of the village that is really gorgeous day or night. If you have time, you can take a train from Varenna all the way up to St Moritz in Switzerland.

Take both setups - It won't do you much good if it's back home when you might need it on the fly.
Thanks. Just have canon stuff. Panasonic alone is the option. Just a would be lighter and still have 28-400. 10 miles of walking a day on guided tour.
I have spent a week in Como at Varenna. Took D7 and two lenses. 10-22mm and 28-200mm and a mono pod. Climbed to the castle above town and used the ferry pass system to ride the ferry around the lake as much as I wanted. 6 day pass saved a lot of money. Photo opportunities are endless. In the City of Como there is a trolley up the mountain that is worth the trip. If you go to Belleigo a short walk out of town will give you lots to see and shoot. Have fun.
