Hi everyone. I'm a newbie in photography and just trying to find new ways to occupy my retirement. I am just using my cell for photos and I'm ready to take the next step. Don't know wether I should take baby steps with equipment or go head first with a higher end DSLR. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to UHH.
You will be getting a lot of suggestions and most will be from people recommending what they use. I use Nikon, so I will suggest either a Nikon D7200 (DX) or a Nikon D750 (FX).
I'm thinking 500 dollar range. I was just looking at a Nikon p900 on line. The zoom looks incredible but doesn't seem to have interchangeable lenses. I have been spending time at Longwood Gardens and enjoy taking pics of flowers and plants. Most of the info on that camera is its powerful optical zoom. Very cool but I don't think it's what I need for close ups.

From B&H for the P900:
Focus Range-
Wide: 1.64' (50 cm) - Infinity
Telephoto: 16.40' (5 m) - Infinity
Macro: 0.39" (1 cm) -
Should get close enough.
Thanks. Looks like a really nice camera.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy whatever you purchase!
I used a Panasonic Lumix FZ150 before getting a Nikon D7200 after retiring. Good Luck in choosing and welcome.
Welcome to the forum. You mentioned Longwood Gardens, so I'm assuming your somewhere near South Eastern PA. To help sort things out, you may want to take one of the classes at Chester County Night school. "Photography Boot Camp". Really good course for getting back into or starting photography.
I know, as a lot here know, what its like being retired and getting a handle on purchasing equipment.
I shoot mostly Canon equipment (5DMIII) Lots of good refurbished cameras and lenses on the CanonUSA site.
Hope that helps.
Welcome. A DSLR is the most fun especially with Photoshop Elelments as your post process software. But your budget will determine what how far you jump. Good luck.
