Hey everyone I'm shooting my little brothers High school graduation at his high school football stadium I will have some ok light since the show starts at 7pm but I figure later on when the students some out I will have those stadium lights I will be using my 300mm long lense until we get down and greet the students can I get some pointers on shooting with the long lense should I bring a tripod? Settings suggestions would help I'm still learning about the settings I'm using a cannon XSI

Which 300mm do you have or is the 300mm also a zoom?
If it's a zoom, it's not going to be very fast at 300.
You'll probably have to crank up the ISO to get a good exposure. I'm not familiar with the high ISO performance of the XSi. Tripod might ba a good idea, or a monopod.
Luckily, it's not a sporting event, needing high shutter speeds.
Have you ever shot & processed raw before?
The raw files have more room to adjust the photos than jpeg, though you can run jpegs through adobe camera raw.

Does it have IS? Bump up the ISO to make sure of a decent shutter speed, use a monopod if you have one.

Is that IS (image stabilisation)?
What settings do you intend to use while there is still daylight available?

Ooo ok Image stabilizer yeah my small lense has it, the long lense doesn't have IS I don't know what settings to start with last time I did a graduation last week I used the auto settings and the pics came out kind of blurry with the zoom lense I wasn't happy with them

Hi, sounds like camera shake due to too slow a shutter speed at the long end of the zoom.
Personally, I use aperture priority a lot (the dial is set to A) and then the aperture I want for the shot. In your case I would set the widest (5.6) and then let the camera choose the shutter speed. Don't forget the ISO, that to 800.
You may wish to make sure that the camera is metering off the center (ish) if you have lit stage.

Settings
Mode to 'AV' (turn mode dial on top right)
Aperture to 5.6 (turn command dial when in AV mode)
ISO to 800 (press ISO button then turn command dial press SET when done)
Set metering to center weighted average (press up arrow button on back then select empty box icon by pressing up arrow - press SET when done)
Check all these things before you go out, how to set and then reset.
I think you may have an AUTO ISO setting, if you use that then I would suggest setting mode to 'TV', shutter priority and then setting shutter speed to 1/320.
If you have time take a few practice shots before you go out and review them.

Yes, a tripod will probably get in the way, especially without the experience of using one.
If you find that you are getting very short shutter speeds at ISO800 (1/500 or faster) f5.6 then you could start to "stop" it down a bit. I.e. go to f8.o, I expect your lens will allow 1/3 stops - 5.6,6.3,7.1 etc. Hope you get some good shots.

My daughter mentioned that some friends took pics then photo shopped them to b&w and then colored back in their kid so that it was easy to pick him out.
