Digital Zoom Vs. Crop

I have done some in-depth testing of shots made with this issue. My conclusion is that there is absolutely no difference in the Q of two images, one taken at 2x digital zoom and one taken of the same scene without digital zoom and cropped to the same dimensions as the first. Digital zoom is thus revealed as a pure gimmick. Has anyone ever had a different result?

You are right. The two are exactly the same.

I've come to the same conclusion. I remember reading somewhere very simple instructions on how to use digital zoom: turn it off! I suppose the only time to use it is with a smart phone when you want to immediately post on FB or other social media site and won't have a chance to crop, or for video.

You're right. When you crop you are digitally zooming.

Attsa Fact Jack!

digital zoom is just the camera cropping the pic. I always turn it off because I try to compose shots for no crop, so why would I let the camera roll over into the digital area and do a crop that I would prefer to control myself.

Digital zoom has never worked any other way that I know of, from my very first Olympus 3.1 Mp P&S.

Best use of digital zoom...Turn It Off!

Nonsense. Your in depth study of shots from an unknown iPhone/tablet/point and shoot only tells me that's one person's opinion and you're not looking outside the box. Then Jack agrees but goes on to mention the main reason for zooming, to be able to post on digital media without post processing. Most iPhone/tablet/point and shooters don't give a crap about processing. Digital zooming is not always the same as in-camera cropping. During your continuing in depth study, please take time to Google pixel interpolation. That's a fancy word that means the camera uses an algorithm to add more pixels to fill in the blank spaces.

My study came from results seen and measured from a Sony a57 camera. Your so called algorithm sounds more like an Al Gore ithm to me.

You have just killed your thread by introducing unnecessary political commentary into it. You may hail from Useless, TX but you should know by now that we try to keep this section about photography and political commentary in the attic.

Then you should look into the a57 manual for "clear image zoom".

Pity the poor Liberals for they know not what they do. They also have no sense of humor, as exhibited in the quote from Peter. They are, however, experts at denigrating one's home town.

Sorry boy, you really don't seem to have the intellectual capacity to grasp the issues. There was no need to bring politics into the discussion. If you want to make politically inclined comments you should expect to get some opposition, I'm sorry that you don't appear to recognize that. Perhaps you live in such a small minded neighborhood that you are oblivious to or don't comprehend those things.

Perhaps you also don't recognize that I'm just playing you.

Your move...

I was thinking there was a town or an extinct town called Useless, TX. Google doesn't know about it, so I guess I am wrong.

Thank you for the "boy" moniker. Very appreciated by this 83 year old. As for intellectual capacity": Two years Field support leader on the Surveyor spacecraft T.V. and data recovery system(first photos from Ranger crash lander and first photos from Surveyor soft lander). Two Years at NASA Houston on Installation and fine tuning of Apollo Mission Simulator, Telecom and Instrumentation Systems were prime concern. Flight Simulator Engineering Specialist for 31 years at American Airlines Flight Academy, Ft. Worth, Texas. Dealing civilly with idiots was never my strong point. Check!
