My wife and I finally made it down there last week. We'd talked of going for several years.
It is the best cave I have been in for photographers because you are self guided, can take your tripod and camera, and spend as long as you like. It is also enormous.
There are two ways in: the natural entrance shown in the photo or the elevator 750 feet straight down. I walked down and took the elevator up. The route down is 1 1/4 miles. Then the route around the great room in the bottom is another 1 1/4 miles. The cave is much bigger than that. I didn't take my tripod down (it is allowed) so wasn't able to take any images that convey the size.
Nikon D800 with Nikon 24-85 lens and SB700 flash.
In a word: Amazing!
Awesome cavescapes. Well done. Really enjoyed these. Gotta get there some day.
Looks amazing and you have recorded some great detail.
Impressive series. I love the entrance shot. It really gives a feel for the descent. Well done.
Good stuff, especially your final classic shot!
Wonderful captures of an awesome place.
Amazing images and can only imagine what it's like to view in person! Thanks!
Great series MtnMan, really enjoyed it. Would you have any need for a longer lens or was the 24-85 about as long as you could use efficiently?

24-85 was perfect. A longer lens would not work due to the dim lighting. You could do well with a wider angle lens and a tripod.
Glad you finally made the trip. I find shooting those caves very difficult. Looks like you nailed it. Great shots!
Caverns such as Carlsbad have stalactites and stalagmites. One comes down from the ceiling, and one comes up from the floor. I could never remember which is which. A photographer friend of mine said, "Think of ants in the pants.....up go the mites, and down come the tites."
Sorry...repost.
Just to mention they even have restrooms and a cafeteria at the bottom of the elevator.
