Carefully!

Just kidding. First blow off, or dust off with a Lenspen, any dust that may be there to avoid scratches during cleaning. If you have fingerprints or stuck debris the best way I have found is Zeiss Lens Wipes, readily available at Walmarts optical department very cheap. After a good cleaning its always a good idea to do a final polish with a good micro fiber cloth as well.

I personally use LensPens . I have one specifically for lenses and another designed for flat filters. Unless your lenses are really greasy or caked with mud, LensPens should meet your needs. They are great for dust, light dirt, fingerprints, and other light oily substances. There are counterfeit versions out there so I would buy only from legitimate camera dealers or directly from the LensPen website

.

My goal is not to get my lens or filter dirty so it does not need cleaning.
If it does I have a Lens pen brush to clean off any dust.
Then I use a high quality lens cleaner with lens tissue. Zeiss has combined both into a single one time use lens wipe. If you keep UV filter on your lens, you should have no need to clean that lens.

He did ask about cleaning lenses AND filters. I treat them the same, as described above.

Use a blower or microfiber cloth for loose particles. I have these Nikon lens wipes for when there's stubborn grime on the lens. They're individually wrapped and have a cleaner already applied to the wipes. They're probably the same as the Zeiss wipes that members have described. It might be easier to just get the Zeiss wipes at Walmart.

I use an air blower (holding the lens with the front element facing downwards so the dust "falls" off), use the brush end of a lens pen to sweep away excess dust and dirt, carefully use the pad end of the lens pen (in a circular motion - I have no idea why I use use a circular motion!) and then give it a final wipe with a micro fiber lens cloth. If the lens/filter has stubborn smears I use a *lens specific* fluid.

In the field I breath on my lens or filter, then rub off in a circular motion starting from the edges and working in with lens tissue. I also carry my trusty Giottos Rocket Blaster with me where ever I go.

I was always told to start from the middle of the lens and work toward the edges. That way, any dust or particles the get knocked loose during the cleaning get moved to the outside of the lens instead of the middle of the lens.

You don't mention how dirty the surfaces are. If just specs of dust: a blower, a lens brush, and lens paper: if the surfaces are really dirty and have oily finger prints etc.: a product called ROR. ROR stands for Residual Oil Remover. It is an excellent product and has many uses. It is made by V-VAX Products. Check it out on www.ror.net
