Makes your camera look bigger,
Which in turn makes you look more like a pro.....

I'm not convinced that hand size is that important. I've always had relatively small hands, they don't change anywhere near as frequently as my cameras do. Never found a camera too big, but several too small and fiddly. For me it is all about the ergonomics from that perspective and the body / grip combination does a better job. On the other hand I'm not concerned about weight and the extra mass helps with stability.

It is, as always, a personal choice.

I personally always find it to be more comfortable to hold my cameras with a battery grip attached, but still seldom use them because of the significant added weight and bulk. Its a conundrum.

I consider it to be arm strengthening exercise if I have to think of it that way, or skiing as leg strengthening exercise. Much more fun and interesting than going to the gym! And you might get into trouble taking pictures in the gym!

An added bonus for my camera is that my grip can take 6 AA batteries or another of the internal battery, which is handy as you can have 1 on charge or with the AA's as spares for a speed light. I havent got a second internal battery yet but i may because of 1 handy feature storage for a second SD Card. I've only had it happen once where I took my camera out took a few shots and realised the card was in my mac at home and i didn't have a spare with me...

With the AA holder it also means i can pick up batteries anywhere again handy if you get caught short.

Mostly i like the bulk which steadies the camera puts the balance in the body not the lens and yes portrait mode buttons are handy.

As others have stated longer shooting between battery changes And making your camera fit if you have very large hands (My main reason)
Being old school I very seldom use the vertical controls, just a habit from the old 35mm camers not having them.

The motor drive on my Minolta X-700 had vertical controls. Useful as noted above.

I've never used the AA battery holder, but it's nice to know that it is there...., and I agree with you on the balance....

It is probably brand specific, Pentax has supported using AA batteries on most of its camera's. A second battery same as the internal is probably more power dense. I may buy one soon if only because that holder has a tray for an SD Card, never want to get caught short again.

It may be brand specific, I have the holders for my Canon grips, I've just never actually used them, but I know where they are....
