Has anyone used Picasa? .

My Dad loves Picasa. It is free, and super easy to use and it does everything that he needs. He uses it all the time to do collages, and other simple stuff.

Be aware though that Google discontinued it last year and stopped supporting it. My Dad figured out how to store a copy that he can run (as Google keeps trying to move you over to another program, that my Dad says is not as good).

So, the moral of this story is, if a software package meets your needs. Then use it.

I've been trying to move him over to PaintShop Pro (which I know extremely well, so that I could teach him how to do more advanced stuff, and even offered to buy him a copy for $50 off of Amazon), but he claims Picasa is all he needs and he loves how easy it is to use. I completely understand his point of view.

I used to, and still do just a few things with GIMP. I think the only draw back is the less than standard menu structure that causes most to choose other editing software.

I guess you are not aware that GIMP's menu structure can be fully customized. Following a youtube video, I altered my menu layout so that it looks and feels nearly identical to that of Photoshop.

Call me cheap but does anyone else on this site use GIMP? I use almost exclusively Photoninja (especially for noise reduction) for raw and GIMP for just about everything else. I do find NIK, ICE and Fusion helpful on occasion (Did I mention that I am CHEAP?). Looking at the paid programs I am currently convinced that the extra cost of Lightroom etc would be better put into good lenses. Being cheap but ready to learn could anyone give opinions to what I may be missing out on?

I guess as many say, all you need is what works for you. Though I'm not sure how one would find that out in terms of comparison with out trying many PP programs. I started by taking a Class in Photoshop using CS5 & CS6, than after a couple weeks bought one of the last free standing DVD-ROM copies of Ps CS6 from Adobe. So I know Ps more or less. It is hard to down grade to drive a Mini Cooper when you are used to a Mercedes Benz. Would I even want to try? Ps CS6 works fine for me.

To be honest with the auto comparisons. I actually own a 2006 Mazda 6i 5Door. My dream car would be a 1965 - 1968 Chevrolet Corvette or an original 1960-63 AC - Ford Cobra. I've seen non-kit "real" Cobras for $1.2 Million! But I could never afford that today. My wife is obsessed with 1964-68 Ford Mustangs and 1969-72 Chevy Novas. Yes, muscle cars. Today I'd have to go with a contemporary Ford GT or high end Chevy Camaro for dream muscle car based on $$$. I'd be curious to drive a Mazda rotary engine model or Mazda V6 engine model.
