Printing Photos - Question

I printed one of my photos, which was converted to B&W. Monitor is not calibrated, (at least not yet). Need to brighten the photo a tad.

Using Paintshop Pro, but I am sure some one with Photoshop can make the translation

Trying to globally brighten photo, familiar with using layers

Should I use Fill Light, Curves, or simple Brighten/Contrast

Use brighten, it will globally lighten the image.

For B-W at the bottom of many pages on the net is a bar which gives the range of as Ansel would say Zones. But... if you really want to "get into it" see:
http://www.drycreekphoto.com/Learn/Calibration/monitor_sensitivity.html

Also build a black box shield [three sides] around the monitor to prevent that "unclean" light of the room from bouncing around. Do not fall for what a less than Genus UHH guy said and paint the inside standard 18% gray... what?! NO x1000, paint it mat/flat soot black so no reflection inside... only worry is "black body radiation" if you can see it ..... aaaa, well, time to get the white jacket that ties in the back: "Dr. I can see
Gibbs Free Energy and feel Temperature" : The Gibbs-Helmholtz Equation ... say What???

If you calibrate and profile that monitor, AND configure your software for "soft proofing," you can use any tool you like, and see what you're going to get on the print.
