Thanks Spider - My camera came with a 18-55 & 55-200 (not so happy with the latter but still practicing) Been getting surprisingly good shots with my 18-55 so not regretting the purchase at all. Going to keep at it - loving the shots you have taken with the D5500 so far - very encouraging to me!

Some of the "kit lens" like you have seem to offer differing results but it has been noted that in the middle of both aperture and focal range is where they produce their best results so on that basis I'd like to suggest something to you. Put the mode dial on the aperture preferred setting and set it on f/8 and set the iso on auto and don't screw the lens out to the extreme focal length on either end. Those settings should allow you to get the best images out of the lens you have, especially the 55-200. In aperture mode, the camera will set the shutter speed for a good exposure and the auto iso will allow the camera an escape route in order to get a good exposure setting with the aperture and shutter speed. You should be able to avoid most lens distortion if you don't go below about 65mm on the short end and 180 on the long end. If you can use your feet and stay further away from the short and long ends you may be able to maximize the quality of your images and not realize that you're not using much more expensive lens. You should see your images improve appreciably using those ideas. When the light starts to get dimmer the auto iso may let you have some noise you don't want but that can often be mostly fixed in post processing. That should help you get the most out of what you have now to maximize the quality of your images when good pictures are important to you and then you can vary from that at will to experiment and learn. Welcome to UHH deer2ker, glad you joined us. I would try refurbished for your lens purchase. Stick to NikonUSA, Adorama, B&H, Cameta or KEH. All are reputable firms.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.
