I've not seen a lot on this subject on UHH before. When I was younger, my eyesight was a lot better. Now that I'm in my sixties, the viewfinder has taken on far greater importance--if I can't see my subject, what's the fun of trying to take good pictures?

For me, at least, a good viewfinder (digital or otherwise) has become an absolute must. How do you feel about cameras you've shot, and is excellence in viewfinder design, magnification, percent of coverage, etc., important to you?

I have a Canon Rebel T5i and Sony RX 100 3, got Leica V-Lux Type 114 for a trip and now only use it--because of the viewfinder. If the sun is really bright I cannot see through the canon and sony, but the Leica is, to me, fabulous. Mainly because of the viewfinder! Good luck with your choice. I agree, I never imagined a viewfinder would make such a difference.

The Canon Rebel line uses a "pentamirror", which is clearly inferior to the pentaprism used in higher Canon and Nikon DSLR's {and in all Pentax DSLR's}

I absolutely agree. A screen is occasionally useful, but for most photography, it does not do the job. That is one more area where both Canon and Nikon have missed the boat on MILC. An EVF is a great solution.

Another important aspect of a good viewfinder is, that you can control your camera and all the settings while looking through it, not possible with the LCD screen!!

I have the same data in EVF and on OLED touch screen... I can focus by dragging a finger on the OLED while viewing through the EVF.

You can do that with the screen right in front of your eyes (like a 1/2 inch away)? Amazing!!

It's easy. You work on a tripod. Or, you hold the camera in your right hand and left thumb and middle finger on the OLED. You look through the EVF. You pull focus with your left index finger on the extended, articulating OLED (that is dark, of course).

Sounds hard, but it's easy. It's great for manual focus when recording video. But it works for stills, too.

Have you your eyes checked for cataracts. The effects come on slowly over the years. Do things that must be white look a little yellowish. That is one sign.

No cataracts, yet! My doctor told me, however, that diabetes may start to affect my eyesight. I'm praying that this doesn't happen.

There are diopters that increase the magnification to replace the one that came with your camera. They are easy to swap out and not expensive. My D7100 takes longer to auto focus using live view, so that might be a factor to consider. You might also consider a Hoodman Loupe to use along with live view.

Not quite all Pentax DSLR's My K200D is entry level and uses Pentamirror, unlike my K5 which uses Pentaprism. I recently got a 2x Pentax viewfinder attachment bought for my K1000 which doesn't have a diopter adjustment it also fits my Canon 1D Mark2 when focused on the focusing screen it makes a huge difference enabling me to see much clearer my focus point. But it also means I can't see my viewfinder controls or match stick needle and most of the frame. The version I have doesn't have a hinge to flip it up out of the way, but i'm still glad i bought it. On the k1000 I have seen the shimmer of the micro prisms and can see well enough to see that go away when my subject is in focus without the 2x with the 2x i can see my subject reach focus and the microprisms. With the canon I can see optically with it and the AF confirm lets me know i have it.

I'm in a weird situation with live view and picture review since i don't need my glasses for shooting but unless i hold the camera at arms length i can't see that lcd screen so I have to put my reading glasses on to look at the screen and off for shooting. I don't use live view very much apart from when shooting long exposures through nd filters.

I do try to avoid using the glasses as much as possible because after an hour or two of wearing them i find my vision is worse when I take them off!

=================
I did have Cataracts but after having the lenses replaced in both my eyes my vision is now 20-20.
It wasn't cheap though. If it hadn't been for Insurance I could never afforded it.
I understand now they can remove cataracts with laser treatments.

After my surgery I did have to adjust the viewfinder on my camera again to get my view perfect.
