Hello, I'm Steve Tidwell from West Point, Utah. I'm retired and besides spending a majority of time with grand kids, my passion is hiking and mtn biking and taking pictures along the way. I first happened on this forum a few months ago and finally decided to be an active participant. The past decade or more I have used my Canon point and shoot cameras for all my pictures, my favorite being the Elph 100HS which I have had for over 5 years. I have always had an interest in photography since I was a boy taking pictures with my folks Kodak box camera and developing my own negatives and making contact prints in our basement. As time went on I bought my first camera, a Pentax ME Super SLR I believe in 1969-72 time-frame and with the move to digital, my film Pentax is permanently retired. Introduced to digital cameras many years ago I have only used Canon point and shoots for the past decade. Since I recently broke my Elph 100 HS while riding my bike in the mountains, I've been looking at the DSLRs available and had pretty much decided I would like the Nikon D750, but even that didn't have all the features I wanted and it's quite expensive. I happened on (what I considered a deal) a display model of the Nikon D5500 with two lenses, extra battery and a camera bag for under $600 and couldn't pass it up. I've used it for about a week now and must say I love it. I'm still trying to figure out the controls so I am not limited to using program mode, but I think I will be very happy with this camera. It won't replace my point and shoot but will add a new dimension of control to my pictures. I am just an amateur who enjoys taking photos of places I've been so I hope you folks will be open to perhaps my sharing with you. I've found from reading the forum posts that there is a wealth of knowledge to be found here and hopefully I can get the help I need to improve my photography. Thanks in advance.
Welcome! Looking forward to your posts and pictures. Happy shooting!

Hello Steve, welcome to UHH.
Welcome to the forum.
Jack
Welcome to UHH Steve, glad you joined us. The Nikon D5500 should serve you well. I also shoot Nikon, presently the D7100. To assist you with learning your new camera, of course, read your manual, Nikon has tutorials and try UTube. On UTube be brand and model specific.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.
