As the title suggests, I am ancient having bought my first 35mm in 1956--it is (I still have it) an Olympus 35-S and in 1967, graduated to a Pentax, an Olympus OM-2 and finally a Nikon F5--the best camera I ever had. My professional career was a videographer for Uncle Sam but my employer gave me an F5 in case the video shots were poor or the camera didn't work. I liked the F5 so much that I bought my own that I still have and I haven't delved into digital photography with a pro camera--yet. I have my eyes on a Nikon 800D but my retirement income forces me to buy it used. To date, nothing comes close to my F5 other than a comparable Canon. I like both of them equally.
My little Nikon digital point and shoot does a better than fair job at snapshots and it sometimes scares me with its quality.
About a year ago, my travels took me to the Pacific island of Peleliu but since I knew it would be like going into the field with the US Army, I decided to leave my F5 at home and take my Nikon digital and I have shots of few people but a lot of WWII relics as well as caves, battlefield detritus, and other mangled military items that reflect the level of combat the Japanese and the US Marines endured. Incidentally, I dropped the digital camera and broke the viewing screen while climbing up a near vertical hill.
While I worked for Uncle Sugar, my assignments were sometimes mundane but I had the pleasure to go behind the former Iron Curtain when the fall of the Wall occurred in 1989 and some food and medical relief operations as well as attending the 50th Anniversary of the landing on Normandy in 1994.
Presently, I don't do much shooting and I need some pushing to get back into it. Family grip and grins, standups and other posing shots bore me and I enjoy making the subject smile (and take the best pics after the posing). Some of your subjects intrigue me and I am always in need of some help. I definitely don't know it all and I need to learn. I hope this site will give me impetus to continue my oldest hobby--photography.
