Just got back from a weekend in Yosemite. I was finally able to shoot the firefall on Horsetail Falls- major bucket list item. I had to post the iPhone shot- my D810 files are too large for AOL- bummer. Trust me- they're spectacular !!
Good job. Takes skill, luck and timing. Some years its cloudy or foggy and it's no go. Did you have to get there early to get a good spot?

It was insanity- hundreds of people. Lucky for me I went to scout the spot at noon and found a couple that were camped out at the perfect spot- they graciously watched my tripod for me and so I came back about an hour before it started. If you go- DO NOT shoot from the North Drive picnic spot- go to the south side- less crowds and better vantage point. You can get the exact GPS coordinates online.
Have never heard of the firefall. Please explain.
WOW!! That's a tuffy to get, congrats

There is a very small waterfall on the face of El Capitan in Yosemite. For a few weeks in February, the setting sun is at such an angle that it shines on the fall and creates the impression of fire falling down . It can only be seen from certain angles and there must be decent flow in the waterfall and there must be a clear sky at sunset. The name comes from a practice that used to take place when there was a hotel atop Glacier Point- they had a bonfire once a week and they would actually push it over the cliff so everyone in the valley could see the fire fall. It was originally a publicity stunt but caught on and became a ritual before it was banned.

Thanks to all. It's an amazing experience but it takes perseverance and luck. I'm still basking in the glow !
