I have an assignment in my photography class to photograph an egg. I know there is a lesson behind this, and I suspect it has to do with lighting, but don't know how to portray that knowledge in the photo. Help!

Edward Weston invented this exercise. If you can find a book of his photos, see what he did with them (and GREAT green peppers, too).

Exactly, Weston, instead of books these days they use computers.

I'm suggesting the quick route for inspiration.... Google Images. More damn egg shots there than anyone can count, my cholesterol went up 30 points just looking at them all.

How weird I didn't think of that. Sometimes I glitch and think it's 1976. Yes, I'm sure you can google him.

Shooting an egg ain't easy You're only cheat is to use a brown egg on a white background. But the real challenge is a white egg on a white background. You'll need some lights.

dawgz, Is this another one of those student assignments where either the student missed the details of the assigment or the teacher failed to set expectations? correctly.

No, not at all. It's a real, valid exercise in photograph involving composition, lighting, and texture. And whatever else a student brings to it. It's pretty hard. I did it. Most people serious about photography have literally given it a shot. Try it for yourself.

Been there for sure but the question I posed had to do with a student...student not knowing exactly what is expected or the purpose of the assignment.

Presumably since is a classroom assignment, there was some explanation provided.

Take a picture of a chicken and tell them it's a pre-egg.

Debba, if you think that the person giving the class has a sense of humor, you may be able to do something like this:

I know it worked for me (I didn't take this picture, it is just the one that I chuckle at every time I see it).

I give this assignment all the time. With the instructions to do anything they like.

It is for several reasons, to see how they think creatively and how do they handle exposing the egg to get white with details.

I have seen fried eggs on concrete, eggs in trees, in a bottle , all sorts of fun things.

Just think outside the box.

Which came first - the chicken or the egg?
