The AS-S has 2 options = matrix/evaluative and a spot.
Is there any option to make this spot bigger or SMALLER? <- similar to exposure.

If I use the spot focus at close distance , that spot takes really small area (in example - person's eye). However , if I focus at long distance it will focus relatively large area (in example -person's head).

And ....does it matter? With the distance, the DOF will be deeper...I believe.

Thank you for the input.

I don't have our D7100 with me,but in the Custom Settings Menu,go under B (metering and exposure) and view your options under "Center Weighted."

I frequently google different questions to supplement forum answers. You can often be camera specific, etc. You tube often has some pretty good answers or videos for learning more regarding specifics.

http://www.everythingd7000.co.uk/metering-exposure-guide/ this may help and also, I would recommend a little reading on DOF and how to attain it. My searches never end and good luck!

Check out info on your focus system, etc, The D7100 is fairly versatile and we are not parting with ours even though we have a few other models. Check out Jared Polin,Matt Granger,Tony Northrup and tons of others on You-Tube and that will lead you to view still more info and on a multitude of topics.

Those are metering modes, not focusing. There is no such thing as "spot" focusing.

You are confusing metering with focusing, they do not relate to each other!

DaveO - I have to recheck- to my perception, you are referring the EXPOSURE (menu B4)...not the focus.
Let me read first the references

Thanks Miro

Thank you for your quick response . By the way ...I am not confused ...yet.
I am asking about FOCUSING !! If there is no option of making that focus point smaller ...so be it.

PS: Some time ago I have read the critique on somebody's "portrait " and there was mentioned the issue with the focus related to distance (zoom). So I became curious. It will be the issue when shooting birds.

My Nikon D90 had that feature. I don't have the camera anymore but I remember trying it out. Nikon must have eliminated that feature in later cameras. I can't find anything about it in the manual for my D7000 or D500. Here is info about it for the D90.

It seems the spot Nikon gives you is the spot you're stuck with. :(

My neighbor once had a dog named Spot, but I never took pictures of him.

Interesting bit of trivia. Cerebus, the mythological dog that guards Hades, traces it's name back to meaning "Spot," originally.

Nikon does not have evaluative focus. That does in fact refer to exposure metering. When it comes to focus there are a couple of basic choices you have to make. (S) for single shot focusing (C) for continuous focus. These are selected by pressing the button by the focus mode switch and turning the rear control dial. Next you get to select the number of points that are used to focus and how they are used. Press the same button and turn the front control dial.

You might try reading your manual starting around page 70. In the index this section is titled "FOCUS".

Bill de - I guess, I finally got the answer - THERE IS not such an option as making focus spot smaller.

However I think you (or myself) may be confused in general function.
1. In AF-S you have 2 options = single spot or matrix (51points?)
2. In other two modes AF-C & AF-A you can choose 1,9,11, 51 BUT it is not focusing scenario!! it is the indication that 1point focusing can be assigned to either of 9 points <- whichever is in the focus.

I do not use moving focusing, so I do not care so much now , nor have I ambition to proof to be right.

You say Nikon does not have evaluative option in AF-S. Hmmm ...So why do you switch between 1 & 51 points?
