Nikon d5500: Photos Remaining on Memory Card LCD Display

On the LCD indicator where it should list the number of photos remaining on the memory card, it lists the number of files remaining instead. I have tried both different brands and different sizes of memory cards without success. I have also spent about an hour on the phone with Nikon's technical service, again with no success.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Have you tried a two button reset? Instructions will be in your user's manual.

Do you mean restoring the default settings by holding down the info and menu buttons (marked by green dots) for more than 2 seconds? Thanks.

That info is set to BUFFER capacity and will not change until you actively start shooting. You can change the setting to card capcity remaining in your menu settings. Check your manual to see how.

Maybe I'm missing your query. The number is meant to be a rough estimate of the number of files (pics)based on the card size and megapixel capability of the camera. Not all files or pics will be the same size. It can not be reset. On the 5500 the R button is also a battery level indicator.

For some unknown reason, this link will not function. The whole line must be manually entered.

I was checking the D5500 manual and couldn't find it. It may be different than other models. The link I ineptly tried to post is out of the manual

Agree with your comments, but need to clarify some things: 1. The no. in question which is enclosed in brackets and located just below the ISO data reads 999 which is the highest file no. available because the memory card is empty. This is a 32gb card with camera settings at jpeg fine and image size large. The no. should be 1K 800 indicating approx. 1800 available exposures from previous experience and also the case on another d5500. 2. I don't know what or where the R button is and don't see it in my manual; please clarify.

If what I have written is not clear, a phone call may help. Please PM me your phone no. Thanks.

Did you type in that link I did something wrong to? It works if the whole line is put in and shows the R button on the back of the camera. Also, the number of shots will vary with the size and type of images you set the camera up for. In other words, you should see the max number if you set up for jpeg basic and the least if you set up Raw/JPG fine.
I'm just guessing from my experience with other models and searching online for info on the D5500.

Thanks for your reply. I must be blind or stupid, but I cannot find how to change this setting to card capacity in my manual. Can you tell me how? Thanks.

Thanks. I wonder if the d5500 changed its LCD screen after this, for both my 5500s have an info button rather than an R button, and the battery status is always displayed on the LCD. Still can't access the no. of exposures remaining on memory card. Thanks for trying!
