DIY Photography suggests that the D810 replacement could be called the D820 and have a 46MP sensor. It's all speculation at this point, but after the photo show in Japan at the end of the month, we should either have details about the D810 replacement or have to wait indefinitely.

If I consider my waiting for an upgrade to the D300, that is my primary choice. Maybe in 2020?

Was that not the D500, skipping the D400?

The quest for sensorS with more and more MP is virtually meaningless to the overwhelming number fo photographers. The number of pictures enlarged to print greater than 20X30 or so is essentially 0. And an even larger print viewed at 2 feet or more from the print will look terrific. I have 16X24 prints from my 18 mp canon 7d original, that have no visable imperfections unless viewed with a magnifying glass. The only benefit to higher MP count would be if these sensors allow use of higher ISO. Otherwise it's a mine is bigger than yours kinda thing.

I think the biggest improvement in prints we do ourselves has come from advancements in ink jet printers than from more pixels.

The extra pixels have changed the way some people shoot. Instead of getting close or using a longer lens, many people now shoot with the subject somewhat small with the intention of composing by cropping. If it gets the picture that the shooter wants, than the high res sensors are just another tool.

No speculation needed, no guess work needed either, just check your calendar, about every two to three years a new Nikon series camera is introduced, it is not rocket science. It is called Marketing.

Spending more on pixels to save money and bulk on lenses makes sense. With respect to a recent discussion on teleconverters, I learned also that some, especially wildlife, photographers love the look of what others might consider excessive pixel density for the main subject and will use lenses that will preserve that look at the expense of corner-to-corner resolution, potential aberrations along the edges, etc. It works for them and we get to appreciate it.

Hi 'jerryc41'... Interesting Question.!!! --- SO, as the CEO of Nikon, what would be the Factors that you (or your HOG team), had to take into consideration (including potential competition) BEFORE you told your Design Team 'your' Vision of the D810 (or D300) Replacements.???

Let's see here...Jerry has been a member of this blog approaching 6 years and, besides having an encyclopedic knack for practically everything there is to know about photography, he always, ALWAYS, has nothing but good advice and insight for all to read...yet here you come, obviously thinking that Jerry just doesn't quite get it so you take it upon your condescending self and say "...it is not rocket science. It is called Marketing." It might be a good idea to re-read ALL your posts before you hit "send" and, when you do, read it as if your post was being written to YOU.
