Being old my eyesight is not so good. Here is a shot of the South of France taken some time ago. I have been doing some PP work on it. Have I over sharpened it? Or does it look about right to you? Maybe you think I have not sharpened it enough? Please click Download to view.
If you want to play with it and show me how it should look - have at it.

Do you remember where were you focusing? Looking at the Download, I don't see anything in focus. It could be the size of the image - not enough pixels.
does not look as though it can take much more
Shakey, I'm a pp student with a long way to go. There may well be things that could improve this shot but to me, it is pretty darn good as it is! I like the scene, the colors are crisp along the coast and there is a hazy feel to the more distant mountainside. It all works well for me.

Interesting thought, Howard. I was using auto-focus while on a moving boat: f8 1/160 sec. I should have used a faster shutter speed maybe 1/250 or 1/500. Good thought for next time. Thanks for commenting.

You are very kind, Cwilson. Thank you for your input.

If you look at 'edges' at magnification - as you sharpen too much you get a wavy line appearing like ripples. However it depends on your end resolution (size) as to whether you 'see' it or not. On a monitor we see pictures larger than we usually print them.
In images with a lot going on, 'sharpen' a little is ok and /or 'clarity'. In images with larger individual subjects, (Less busy) look at doing a 'high pass' and merge in order to sharpen. This takes a grey scale tracing of the picture and then boosts edge detail. you can specify the edge width of the tracing so it can be a fine touch or a dramatic touch depending on subject.
The focus is out - so a small 1/2 A4 print (1/2 US Letter size) will give you a memento of your trip in reasonable sharpness, but not one to go on the wall.
Much has been said about sharpening: For and against.
when you see images close up on your monitor, the temptation to immediately hit the sharpen slider needs to be tempered with 'what am I doing with this picture'. If you sit further back (as you would look at a wall hanging) often the 'need' disappears.
Have fun
I think you have the right amount of sharpness Shakey. I think the main problem is camera shake. I would try to shoot at 500 of a sec if you can. Even is you can hod the camera still the boat will be moving. Good Luck on your next outing.

Thanks for your detailed explanation, G Brown. The problem is I can't see whether it's too much or too little whatever method I use.

I would say the buildings and boats need the sharpening and the background is still soft but looks naturally hazy so doesn't need it. However, the sea isn't responding well to it. To my eye the sea is the only part that looks over-sharpened. I selected the sea and used denoise and negative clarity, contrast and sharpening to soften it. You could probably get better results working from the original. Either don't sharpen globally and select the buildings and boats for sharpening, or sharpen globally and select the sea for softening. Either way you need to make a selection and edit differently.

Thanks for your good work, R.G. Your explanation and options are clear and precise. I like your interpretation of you would do it. Thanks.
Looks fine to me. If you download the hit the + to make it bigger you see some granularity in it but looking at it normally in download it's great looking shot.
