I broke my Canon Powershot Elph 350 HS point and shoot camera and am looking for a replacement that I can carry anywhere for spontaneous snap shots. I did have problems with handheld night scenes with the elph and would like this feature on the new camera. Any recommendations? I am not married to any particular brand.

Are you looking for a Bridge Camera or Pocket Style type? There are so many of each type to choose from.

You might investigate the Ricoh GRII. Ricoh is an interesting company founded by engineers who designed business imaging devices like copiers, fax machines and scanners. Today, Ricoh owns Pentax, known for high quality cameras. The GRII is an excellent compact camera with a wide range of customizeable features. Check it out on Google, YouTube, DPReview, B&H Photo, etc.

The Canon G1X is a remarkable point and shoot camera. It has full manual mode, TV mode, AV mode and all the automatic modes. The build quality is superb, (as you'd expect from Canon), the image quality is awesome (it is on par with my old 450d dslr) and it is user friendly. I bought the Canon G1X for a European road trip and I am very happy with the images I captured. Even though the MarkII is the current model I decided to buy the MarkI, mainly because it was a bargain basement price but also because it had a viewfinder.

Camera with small sensor will have problem with handheld night scenes. If you want this feature look for a camera with the larger sensor and with good image stabilization.

If all you do is shoot snap shots, just use a smart phone.

Do you have a modern cell phone? If you have not tried your phone, it won't cost anything to try it. Cell phone cameras have canabalized the Point and Shoot (P&S) market for a reason.

There are some P&S cameras remaining, and the specialized P&S, waterproof, etc, cameras still have a market but overall the P&S market is much smaller and continuing to shrink.

The phone is well suited for your first requirement of carrying it anywhere.

Had the same problem as you once before. Found there are a whole lot of cameras to chose from. I made a list of the specific features that I wanted in the camera, low light capability, stabilization, wide to mid range zoom, etc. Then went shopping on the internet for cameras that had my listed features. Once found I then looked up reviews done for the cameras on my list. With this information narrowed down my list to the top five. Then went shopping in local stores to actually see and hold the cameras. I bought one from a local store. Found that once I started using the camera it really wasn't the right one for me. Took it back and exchanged for another camera and same thing happened. Took it back and exchanged for another camera. This time I got the right one and still have it. Funny thing, started out wanting a P&S camera but ended up with a bridge camera. The experience taught me to think about my camera features in order of importance because no one camera is ever going to meet all of your wants. Just have to decide want features you are willing to live without.

If you are looking for a pocket style camera, there are good choices in the Panasonic, Sony, and Canon Brands. You can get good prices among all of them. From lower to higher prices. The Sony RX100 series is a good choice. You don't necessarily need to purchase the most recent model, which will be the most expensive. Look at all of the above Brands. Good luck.

I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix S7000 from the Nikon Refurbished site for $169. It is perfect for what I wanted it for. Takes movies of my grandson (8) playing hockey as well as still images. Fits right in a pocket. Good luck!

I just sold a Canon SX pocket camera and bought a Panasonic TZ60, although the Canon was a very good camera the TZ60 is a far superior pocket camera even the earlier models which can be bought quite cheaply are also excellent cameras. I also use my LG smart phone quite often which also produces excellent images, the main drawback with using a smartphone in in bright sunny conditions when the LCD screen cannot be seen properly

RX 100 iii is my choice, very sophisticated when you need it, too. Low light very good.
Have fun!
