I am looking at the Canon EF 1.8 STM lens for close up and a walk around lens. I know that it will pair with my current camera, a Canon T5i asp-c. I am looking at wanting to upgrade to a full frame Canon in the future. How well does the STM lenses work with a full frame camera? Are they better than a Canon EF 50 1.4 standard lens for full frame cameras. I know "L" lenses are better quality but my budget does not allow for them. I don't want to have to buy the lens twice so advice is needed on which one to go with based on current and future needs.

I assume you are talking abot the EF
50mm f/1.8 STM lens. You left that part out. It is a very decent fast prime lens at a rock bottom price. It will work just fine with a full frame body. On a Canon APS-c body it will have a 35mm equivalent angle of view of 80mm. That focal length wouldn't be my choice for general walk around lens on a crop camera since it is not wide enough for the way I shoot. I much prefer a 35mm lens for that purpose. I'm not exactly sure what your definition of "close up" is. Do you mean as a macro lens? Do you mean as a portrait lens? The Canon EF 50 f/1.4 has a much better build and may be a bit sharper in the center, but it has its own issues and will likely be replaced soon. The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is one of the best bargains available and a big improvement over previous versions. Unless you have the budget for a much more expensive lens you should get one, but it won't necessarily meet all you needs.
Thank you for your help. I am looking at close up photos of flowers or other small items. Sorry I left that out it is what I am talking about. I don't do people shots so not interested in that aspect. I shoot landscapes, flowers, plants and wildlife. I am just starting to get into close up and macro photography. So all my current lenses are zoom lenses. I just got a refurbished Canon EF 100 USM Macro lens and I am practicing macro shots with it.

Ok. The EF 50mm f/1.8 is definitely not a macro lens, which is apparently one of your reasons for wanting to acquire it since you said you were looking at that lens for close up and walk around purposes.

There is also Kenco extention tubes which will really let you get closer. For flowers, objects etc they work very well.
I have used my daughters 40mm with my 1D bodies and it is a great little lens for the low low cost. I would say go for your choice of stm lensif it has the features you are looking for or desire.
Best,
Todd Ferguson
The Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM will operate very well on any Canon full frame camera, like the 6D. Don't expect it be a great macro lens though, it simply was not designed for macro. Take a look at the Macro Photography section of the Ugly Hedge Hog, and pose your question there. Those people will really set you on the right course. There are 3rd party lenses that come with a Canon mount that will fit your bill for close up, and macro. One is the Tamron 90mm, and there are others. Keep in mind the difference between regular lenses and macro is depth of field, and working distance. Good Luck.

The 50/1.4 is clearly the better lens of the two, in IQ and build quality. Both of course work fine on FF.
