I want to update my Mac Yosemite 10.10.5. I went to Applications and hit install and the message told me I could not. There was a learn more button which I hit to no avail. No information. I have a mid-2009 Macbook pro with 366GB of free storage. Any suggestions??
Thank You.

You need to update to MacOS Sierra, the current Mac operating system.

An even better option would be to upgrade to a new MacBook Pro. Your's is 8 years old. Way past it's usefulness as your primary computer.

I'm not positive, but it seems that your computer (like my MacBook) will not accept the upgrade due to the now out of date operating system. I read an article on which products could be updated and the cut-0ff was right about that time period.
While my laptop is still an excellent computer, I am going to sell it and get a newer one. Fortunately, my iMac is good for a long time - I hope!

I think you are right. Could confirm on the Apple web site. New MacBook Pro is the better option.

I ran into the same problem with my mid-2009 Macbook Pro. Apple says it is too old to update. Sounds like a push to sell another computer.

You should buy a new computer. An 8 year old computer is way to far out of date to use as your primary computer and cannot take advantage of the technology that's out there now.

I bought a new MB Pro 13" in 2015, but still like to use my old 15" for some things.

Thank you. To date, this laptop serves me fine. Updating was a thought. I don't think I will be in the dark if I don't upgrade. Thank you for input.

Updating was a thought. Not a necessity. If I were 54 and not 74 I might consider it. Thank you for input.

You haven't said which version of MacOS you have on your machine. If you are running the original OS that came on the machine, (OS 10.5x or 10.68) you may need to obtain a later version on hard media – a CD or USB stick. But according to MacTracker 2, you can update your machine to the latest OS, Sierra. Try <http://www.apple.com/macos/sierra/>. If that doesn't work, send me a PM with a snail mail address and I'll send you Yosemite, Mavericks or El Capitan – your choice, via snailmail on a USB stick.
