Gray Market Question

We know that if you buy gray market cameras and lenses in the US you don't have warranty and with some brand no service of any kind. Now if I live in Europe can I make use of the USA warranty? If not then visitors from Europe would buy gray market good here.

It would probably serve you better to contact the company whose equipment you are considering and ask them how their warranty works in any hypothetical case. The plethora of guesses by UHH members will be numerous and confusing.

Nikon Deals states Nikon will service some Nikon products. I don't know for a fact if it is true.

If you are a American tourist, traveling to Germany, and you buy a brand new Nikon camera at an Authorized Nikon Dealership there, and you provide the invoice proving you bought it there, Nikon USA will honor the warranty. If you are from Germany, traveling to New York City, and you bought a Nikon camera from B&H, and you have the B&H invoice, you also have a Nikon USA warranty. Correct me if I am wrong on this.

When you buy a product new you wherever you are in the world you are entitled to the manufacturers warranty. That is supplied by the manufacturer not the vendor.

To get that warranty in the disjointed and inefficient world of the digital camera manufacturers you may have to make your claim in the country from which you bought the camera as the current system certainly for Nikon and Canon does not seem to be capable of cross charging from one country to another to provide universal warranty support (which most other industries managed to deal with in the 1980's).

So when buying overseas you need to check that the dealer can provide warranty and return the camera to you if it fails. You will be responsible for shipping it to the vendor.

We have bought a number of high end Nikon bodies when working overseas; so far without a warranty issue, but use outlets that will support when we return to the UK.

Nikon France would probably not want to repair a Nikon USA product. Of course, each entity makes its own rules. "Gray market" means the local Nikon network did not make a profit from the sale, so they will not want to repair it for free.

'Grey Market' means product not supplied via the distributor in the country of purchase. There are plenty of dealers who bulk purchase camera bodies in the far east, import them and sell them in your country but who cannot supply a good local warranty. These are just as much grey products as those an individual purchases from overseas and imports personally.
