Hi,
I am going from film to digital and I want to know what to buy. I now have Pentax SLRs. Should I go Cannon or Nikon DSLR? I don't think I need full frame.

Do you have Pentax autofocus lenses? If so why not stay with Pentax?

I Have both Pentax and Nikon. I have a D800E and a D500. Ergonomically I far prefer Pentax. I prefer Pentax menu system. The only reasons I have Nikons are I wanted a full frame. I print a lot of large pictures to sell. The other is Nikons are far superior at focus tracking for flying birds, so I bought a $2000 toy. If you are interested in video, Pentax is not a good choice.

It is possible I prefer the handling of Pentax over Nikon due to very long use of Pentax.

You're about to get a lot of opinions. Mine is from experience. I went from Nikon film to Nikon digital, but I won't push Nikon over Canon, since you don't have previous film lenses that will fit your film cameras as I did. I bought a Nikon D5100 because at the time, it had all I needed. For me, light weight and the versatility of having a built-in flash and an articulating back made the package all I hoped for. This camera has never let me down, and I've done some amazing photography and video with it. Nowadays, I would recommend trying the D5600. Read up on it and compare it to a similar Canon, hold the cameras, talk to owners listen to the shutters, change the lenses, see if the menus are easy enough for you to navigate. I'd have to say that, unless you are an obsessive pro making huge enlargements, the size of the sensor is not going to offset the advantages of the smaller format. Good luck deciding, let us know how it goes and what you eventually end up with!

If you have older no-AF Pentax lenses or AF lenses you might wish to stay with Pentax.

This link explains using the older manual lenses on your digital camera directly from Ricoh and if you have Pentax A lenses all meter functions work you just have to do manual focus. The older non-A lenses still meter in stop down mode.
Pentax makes a pretty excellent line of digital cameras including full frame.

The link above describes this FF camera.
So again if I were invested in Pentax I would seriously look at staying with it.

My personal system is Canon, I like it but if starting over all the choices would drive me nuts as well.
Many are going Olympus for size and weight savings over the larger APSC and FF cameras. Even mirrorless larger sensor cameras require large lenses.
But back to Pentax, it looks pretty good to me and I hope the Pentax users on the forum speak up as to what they think as I and many others have no real experience with the Digital Pentax system.

Go with which ever feels more comfortable in your hands. Pretty sure Pentax has or will shortly have a full frame body.

Stick with Pentax, it will be more familiar, your lenses will all work, and they offer the best bang for the buck of all the full frame bodies out there with the K1.

And if you should decide to go full fram Pentax, you already have full frame lenses.

You have not provided a budget, but don't overlook good quality second hand kit in anycase. I have had 7 x Canon cameras over the years but only one Nikon. My last Canon was an APS-C format 7D mark II and I thought it to be a brilliant camera. I now have a Nikon D500 APS-C and it is simply superlative: and in my hands far superior to my 7D mark II. If you are changing completely take a look at the new Olympus EM1 mark II in M43 format (I also have one of those). It is a stunning camera and I would actually keep it in preference to my D500, which is saying a lot. Alternatively, Pentax have just announced their new KP camera which is designed to rival the Nikon D7200 APS-C format camera.

The choice is yours, you need to really STUDY both brands, go to a store, feel them, take simulated pictures with both. Read up on the specs. Price them both. What kind of shooting will you be doing and get the camera that is right for you. You will get many thoughts on this site but it is YOU that is buying the camera. Take all the opinions you get here and then use YOUR brains to decide what is best for you.

Nikon D750.

Read comparisons and specs, and decide what features are important to you.

OK, I'll join the debate. For my money, stick with Pentax. You no doubt have lenses that would probably work on a digital but, even if you didn't, the format/learning curve on a Pentax digital will look familiar to you and be easier. My recommendation? Get the Pentax K-70 that came out just a few months ago or if money is tight, get its predecessor the K-50. Take a look:
