I'm using back button focus on my D7200 and spot metering. Question is this. When i focus on an object then meter on something else like the sky. How do i lock the metering? Do I hold the shutter button half way without letting up? Seems like you have to have a delicate finger or is there a way to lock the initial metering. Thanks

What camera are you using?
On my Nikon Df I use the AF-ON button for BBF and the AE-L/AF-L button for AE Lock.

I shoot in Manual all the time. Thanks but that doesn't explain what Im talking about. When I lock focus on object and meter on something else. How do I keep the meter from changing when I compose photo.probably simple. But I'm not a smart man. Thanks

Does the AE button lock the metering? I thought maybe it did.

Your kinda all over the place. If your using BBF than I Assume you have Assigned the AE-L/AF-L button to BBF, Correct??? So this button is already assigned. If you go into Custom setting menu and scroll down to Controls, press this button then choose the FN button to assign, Once in that menu you can scroll down and assign the FN button to AE-Lock When Pressed. You can Only assign One control for any one button, hope this helps......P.S. Your actually Locking Exposure, Not your metering method. Once you have metered on your scene and then press the Assigned button to Lock Exposure, FN if you make that choice, then Exposure will be Locked.

I'm using theAE button to lo lock focus not exposure. Exposure is when I push shutter button half way. Do I hold it half way and not let up to recompense . I'm not good explaining thanks.

As you suspect, if you are using back button metering, Custom Setting C1 will allow you to lock the exposure with a half press of the shutter release button, independently of the button you are using for back button focus. But you'd have to enable it, since I think the default is off.

As Gene explains below this will work as Long as you have Assigned the shutter button. Again go into your Custom Setting Menu scroll down to Timers/AELock, select C1 Shutter release button AE-L press select then toggle to the, On Position, press OK then this will work...If you do not set this, the camera will Continue to meter as you move the camera around. Or like I have done assign the FN button for exposure lock.
