Dave Brubeck helped save jazz by bringing jazz into the concert halls instead just in the clubs which were beginning to decline. I heard an interview with him in which he said he was about to graduate from a California college with a degree in music when the professors discovered he could not read music. They made an agreement with him that they would allow him to graduate if he promised to never teach music. He must have had total recall when it came to music. He was already making a living with music when he was in college.

There have been other musicians who could not read music. Errol Garner couldn't. Brubeck was not a great piano player, with respect to technical ability, but his style and showmanship made up for it.
Thanks,
Mark

Still have the Take Five vinyl. Friend of mine in HS could play it on the piano.

Saw them twice in concert, once in Chicago in like 64 and again at Duke in the early 70s.

Still listen to the album every so often (digital).
