So, I am led to believe this was with a D610 and 70-300 lens ? - at very close range ? hand held?

Oops- sorry, you're half correct.
D610 is the camera I used but I had rented a Nikon 200-500 lens and a 1.4x tele-converter for an effective focal length of a whopping 700mm. It was fun!
