Most cameras will have a shutter in front of the sensor. If not, some sensors can be damaged by prolong exposure by direct sunlight. This is also why using some type of solar filter is best for the camera as well as the eyes.

I don't have the references right here but the sensor can be damaged by live view because the shutter is open in order to have live view.
I personally would not risk it. You are focusing the sun on your sensor like a magnifying glass on an ant.
