My first whooping crane

At the Hiwassee Refuge this morning, and this whooping crane was visible about a half a mile away. The shot isn't great, but you can see the ID bands and radio antenna. It's a thrill to see one, there are only about 105 that migrate in the eastern US.

Nikon D7100 with Tamron 150-600 hand held

Fantastic. For several years we had 4 to 6 that would pass through Kansas and stop at Quivira Wildlife Refuge. Not seem them for the past 3 years, however. They close the refuge while the whoopers are there.

Nice capture. I have the same Nikon D7100 and also the 150-600 tamron. I keep that lens on my tripod. It is a heavy brute. My walking around lens is the Nikon 55-300 I very seldom use the Nikon 18-55

Thanks, NikonCharlie! We see one or two a year here. It's always a thrill.

Thanks, Hal81! It can get a little heavy, I generally take a Tylenol before I go out to shoot. I used a pistol grip to shoot hand held.

Congratulations ggttc! I own the same camera and lens, but unfortunately mine hasn't produced a whooping crane!
