Ring lights are the best thing to use especially for real closeups using macro lenses.
This is a common mis-conception by non-macro-photographers. The shapes of insects, spiders, and flowers is mostly cylindrical or hemispherical. Ringflashes provide very "flat" illumination, which obscures roundness. An off-set, diffused speedlight best revealed depth & roundness of very small subjects. 90% of the active macro-photographers on this website use a single, diffused speedlight, and about 5% use two (or even three) diffused speedlights. Very few (if any) macro-photographers who post on UglyHedgeHog, use a ringlight or a ringflash.

This was $60 at Amazon. I can't imagine that the lights alone could be too expensive. They came with 50 watt bulbs and 75 watt spares.

They were originally designed for intra-oral photography, shooting pictures inside the mouth.
The axial lighting made it easier to light inside the mouth keeping shadows to a minimum. You get light, but because it's very flat, it doesn't really help define the shape of the subject. Unless you're stuck shooting inside the mouth or something else within a hole, better to give the subject some shape by using lighting with direction. Several "ringlights" let you change the lighting ratio between 2 flash tubes (I think most have 2 tubes instead of one circular flash tube) but I personally don't find that's enough difference and wind up taking the flash off the lens.

Actually, "marco" has previously made subject lines, so this is his sixth or seventh appearance.

There are so many things misspelled here on the hog, I subconsciously autocorrect.
