Jim,
I was reading some of the equipment blogs on Jeff Cable's website this evening. He has his experience with the 5D4. Probably has the 1Dx Mk II but I didn't hit it yet. He shoots both and is a major sports shooter as well as doing a ton of event shooting. Interesting site.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

I have been a Canon user for a long time currently using a 7D MII and very happy with it. Most of my photography is with a local Professional Hockey Team (Game Photos), other misc. photography. However I have been getting an "itch" for a new camera, although the 7D MII is working great.

I am trying to make up my mind which way to go, either a Canon EOS 1D MII or Canon EOS 5D MIV. They both seem to be great cameras, although there is quite a price difference, and quite similar in operation with a few differences. I have read and researched everything I can find about both cameras, but just can't make a decision. The 1DX MII priced at $6299 (Kit - Body Only) and the 5DMIV $3499 (Body Only). The cost difference tends to push me to the 5DMIV, but because I would like this to be my last Camera purchase, I just can't make a decision.

My question to all, is the EOS 1DMII really worth the additional $3000?

Yes, the 1Dx Mark II is worth the $3000, but you probably don't need it. Of course, if money isn't hard to come by, go ahead and get one. You won't be disappointed. I have the 7D Mark II and to complement it I got a 5D Mark IV. I'm very happy with this combination.

I did run into some Jeff Cable comments on the 1Dx Mk II in some older blog posts last evening. I don't agree that it's $3,000 price difference if you try to get the comparison close by adding the battery grip and a battery. Then you are closer. I feel the 1Dx Mk II has slightly better high ISO capabilities than the 5D4, better build quality and definitely better video capabilities because of the CFast card use. But it is larger and heavier so that might be a negative. But I like the size in my hand and the balance that weight gives with larger lenses, like the 70-200 II and the 100-400 II. The 5D4 without a grip felt like it was only half in my hand. I have straps to carry the weight when out walking around so that was not a big deal for me.

I looked at going with the two camera option of the 7D II and 5D4. In the end I felt I didn't need the 30 MP files and that the 7D II was a couple years old. I decided I rather have one camera I feel could handle anything I needed or wanted to do for a good while.
Now if I was to buy a second newer camera I would consider a 5D4. But i might also rather have a second 1Dx Mk II. It is always going to be a question of what one wants vs needs vs desires vs can afford. I saved for many years to get this camera, but I'm very happy with what I decided to get too.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Unless your a sports photographer get the 4. There's a reason for 20mp and thats prossesing speed that is a comprimise. The 4 will do more for less with advantages like touch screen. Consider size and application.

I do not have the 1DX but I do have the 5D MKIV. I have to agree with most about this. If you shoot fast action, go with the 1D. I do fine in studio with the 5D IV but have noticed that on location, fast moving children can be a challenge. Their attention span can be measured in milliseconds. Although the focus system on the 5D is VERY good, I think the 1DX series probably is the best best for fast action.

Your price of $6299.00 does include a C Fast card and a reader. I'm in the same boat as you but am also looking at the Canon 1DX. One other advantage of the 5DMKIV is that it uses the same battery as your 7DMKII and you can buy a Canon dual battery pack for the 5DMKIV.

I used to go to professional ice hockey games and the action is fast and furious. I therefore wonder why you would consider changing a sports/wildlfife orientated camera for a 5D mark IV, which isn't. If you are desperate to change your camera, then surely it has to be the 1DX mark II. If you can afford to dump your Canon kit consider buying a Nikon D500 + Nikkor 300mm f4 PF VR + 1.4 TC III and an intermediate zoom. I had a 7D mark II and it was brilliant, but in my hands my D500 is even better.

Thanks Todd - I would pull my hair out trying to make a decision on what to do (that is if I had any hair), I am kind of leading to the 1DX but still kicking back and forth which way to go. One of these days I will just get on the laptop and make the order and hope that it makes me happy. Just not sure how long it is going to take me to make that decision. Hopefully soon.... THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY

You might want to look up Arthur (Arty) Morris and read his take on all of this. His body of choice right now for what it's worth is the 5DMKIV. Sold his two 7DMKII's and now very seldom even uses his 1DX.

It's a big decision and I kicked it around every day for a couple months until I almost got to the point of information overload. One thing would be to buy from B&H and have a 30 day return option. I buy most of my stuff there and some from the local camera store. I have always had great service from B&H.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

The MKiii was hit and miss on focus but the 4 is almost perfect and for me and a significant improvement with the new processor. I'm sure the 1D is good but I'm not sure you can measure a difference in Portraiture. I've not owned a 1D but it is the wepon of choice for sports and media for sure. When speed is important and noise and image quality can be lesser...sharpness/freeze action will be superior because of the transfer rate available with the smaller pixel sensor.

GOOGLE George Lepp (Outdoor Photography). He did a thorough comparison review of those 2 cameras recently. Can't remember the date now but the article is most likely still in the Outdoor Photographer archives. Should help you make your decision. Have you considered the EOS 5D sr?

The bottom comment says it all in that article for sports photographers.

One of my guests on an Africa photo safari in October was wishing for a larger buffer with his new D5lV.

I own a 5DIII and would love either camera, but for the application the OP wants to use it for, the frame rate/buffer will be a big decider. Grasping how a sport photographer uses his camera can be elusive.

I wrestled with the same question regarding the 5DMKIII and the 1D
I choose the 5DMKIII. I was and am still happy with that decision.
I took the extra money and purchased Glass.
Lenses makes more difference in the quality than the Camera.
The camera makes almost no difference.
Sports on a 5DMKIII works great.
