With Nikon the serial number is a dead give-a-way. I'm not sure about others, but probably something similar.

Since a label says Nikon or Canon and that label is in fact a verifiable exact label of the company How the heck can we tell if it is grey market or not? Did someone steal a shipment of Nikons or canons to resell? I mean how can we tell? I know you all out there say if it's price is too low it is probably grey market. I don't care for probably. Either it is or is not Nikon or Canon. What makes the product grey market in the first place when the logo is plainly on the product and only the manufacturer can tell the difference how are we to now it is not real?

Often it's the warranty, return policy and affordability because in poor country they may have to lower the price to sell their products. Of course it's also taxes.

It is also protection for the US dealers. The manufacturers fix the price at which the dealers will sell. The dealers are not allowed to compete. (Though I thought that was contrary to free enterprise system.) But they set a different price in different markets. The refusal to recognize the warranty is part of this corrupt system.

Actually, this "corrupt" system, as you call it, helps protect the little guys. From the rate of closures it's obvious that the hometown camera shops are already fighting a losing battle against on-line sales and the big box stores. By setting the prices the manufacturers ensure that the big guys can't drive the little guys out of business even quicker by offering discounts the little guys can't match. No system is perfect and some retailers will always find a way around it but I applaud the manufacturers for trying to protect their authorized dealers, whom, I suspect, have a substantial investment in selling the product. MT Shooter is an authorized dealer. It would be interesting to hear his take on it. BTW, it is nothing new. The mattress business works the same way. Probably a number of other products also.

Canon does not have a Grey Market policy. They will repair the camera equipment no matter where it is from. Nikon, on the other hand, absolutely will not repair grey market equipment. However, there are a few repair shops still left in the country that will repair grey market Nikon equipment and there are even some independent warranty companies that will cover grey market equipment.

Canon does have a grey market policy. Here in the US they will only honor the USA warranty. They will, as you state, repair any Canon product, but without a USA warranty the owner will pay the going rate. With Canon, unlike many Nikon products, once the warranty period is over there is no difference between grey and USA as far as repairs.

The D7100, D610, D800, D810 and D4s DSLR cameras were recently added to Nikon's list of bodies that are authorized for repair in the USA by Nikon authorized third party repair centers. This means owners of grey market bodies now have a means for servicing them in the USA. A reader already checked with the two largest repair centers (APS and C.R.I.S.) and confirmed that both have been supplied with all the necessary info/certification/parts for work on the mentioned models and that both will work on grey market bodies. There are currently 8 centers authorized to work on the D4s and 7 on the D810 - you can see a listing of them on this Nikon page (first select category, model and then you see the list of available repaid facilities):

Here in Australia, the Grey Market is determined by the outlet not being an official Nikon (or other brand) outlet. Nikon, and I assume other manufacturers will not honour a warranty if the product is not purchased from an official outlet.
