Here is a scene with an extremely low contrast that was easily expanded to look normal (never mind the dust spots on the sensor).
It's an example where ETTR would have provided no benefit.
Looks like an abundance of information that was waiting to be post processed. A lot of detail hidden in that fog. Did you "zone"?

No. The DR was so narrow I could have probably gotten a useful exposure within +/- 2 EV. The added contrast was easy to get simply by picking a white point and a black point.
Here is another middle-distance image. I gave it the same treatment.
The morning was pretty much a washout for any distant shots so I moved on to closer subjects.
