Our guide at Monument Valley is also a very good photographer. He showed us some night photos he had taken of the various formations by painting with a tactical flash light. He said it cost around $80. They were very good.

Or the Streamlight Strion LED. It is a tactical light, extremely bright, about 6" long and 3/4" in diameter. It is rechargeable and comes with an charger that takes a 12vdc cord/ car charging plug or a 110vac cord.

This is slightly larger than a AA style flashlight but is very durable/ waterproof, etc. I have 2, one in my nightstand and the other in my vehicle.

Highly recommend if you want quality not cheap crap.

Try Streamlight's web site. I have a couple of theirs which use AAA's, one even has a flexible neck.

Lot's of places sell the new LED flash lights (FL). Prices average from a buck to around $40 (USD).

If you want very bright FL, look for the ones that use a 1 to 3 watt LED segment. Several are "focusable" so you can vary the light beam from a spot to a wide glow-like beam. Those are from around $15 to $30.

One of the less expensive stores I look in is Tractor Supply Company. They have their own brand and others like Coast. Every season near hunting, they have some really good ones with a 3 watt segment that are variable that go for around $15.00.

I need a good flashlight to use with my night photo expeditions. I have looked at e-bay, amazon and B and H at the 18650 lithium battery lights. ptices tange from 4.99 yo 89.99. I'm not sure if you can see it in my profile picture but I absolutely love my Olight M1X Striker. I love this torch so much that I posted a review on Amazon (where I purchased it) and Olight's website. I love the torch so much that it the build quality of it convinced me to purchase their tactical light for my G20.

It uses an 18650 battery or two CR123. Solid build out of aluminum. Has a total of five modes for brightness. Has brightness levels from 0.5 lm to 1000 lm plus a strobe function. Dual switch control and reversible clip.

I have owned many, many, (too many) torches from different brands. Streamlight, Maglite, knock-offs, and everything in-between. This is, hands down, the best and most reliable torch I have owned. Totally reasonably priced as well! It's $60 through Olight's website, plus a battery and charger. You can find them on Amazon for $70 and it includes a battery + charger.

At the minimum...take a look at the torch. Cheers!

[Edit]

Olight uses a CREE LED and I have a few friends (police and other) who have a lot of the other Olight products. They are all excellent. Awesome quality and really great value. Check their site. I know they have something that fits your needs.

These are fantastic, but the high voltage batteries I bought for them were a shade too short, so the light was intermittent. Now I use Eneloops - still very bright. If you want the high voltage batteries, get them from a place that allows for returns in case they don't work. I didn't see a great difference in brightness between the 3.7v and 1.2v batteries.

These are the too-short batteries.

Jerryc41,

Glad to see others using Amazon Smile! If you're already going to spend the money...why not have Amazon donate some of their proceeds to charity?!? Cheers!

I use a 8 inch flashlight made by STREAMLIGHT. 1100 lumen - cost $110
That steel made marble, together with a handful of fire starters, stay in my pack at all times.
I use the light for night drives in Africa too.
Alaska nights are long and dark, and a good light is a smart investment.
Its bright enough to blind any attacker. I use a headlight, but even the best models don't
have nearly the light output of the Streamlight. When working at remote locations, its best to carry both.

[quote=martinfisherphoto]I've owned several mag lights over the years. First thing to go is the bulb, next is the switch, would never buy one again. I will second on the head lamp, a must to keep your hands free.[/quot

I've had the same Maglite for over 25 years. Takes 3 D batteries. I use it almost every day and I don't remember ever changing the bulb. The thing is awesome.

Walleye world has been selling a plastic light similar to the harborfreight ones for $1. When the batteries die you can just as easy toss them and get a couple more

I'm a true believer in buying the best you can afford. There is no better flashlight than a Surefire. How can I say that. Look at what Delta Force, SEAL teams and cops uses. It comes with a life time warranty. When my lights finally gave out after 15 years of hard use, Surefire replaced it with a brand new model for free no questions asked. Made in America.
Only draw back is they are not cheap.
