I have the kit lens, 24-120. I am going to a Formula 1 race in March and am sure I would need a longer lens. I can buy new or used in good condition or rent. I would appreciate input as to which manufacture and lens you would recommend.

Thank you in advance for your responses. I learn something everyday on the Hog.

There are three competitive choices:

Nikon 200-500
Sigma 150-600 C
Tamron 150-600 Gen 2

The first and last are $1,400 new, the middle $1,000.

You can read threads here or Google comparisons. You can't go wrong.

(I have the Nikon.)

Sigma 150-500 used if you can find it will be much cheaper.

What is your budget?

Will you be hand holding the lens at the race? If so, super-telephoto lenses will get to be too heavy. The Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 is a full frame lens but it's light enough to carry around all day. The Nikon AF-S 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 is another great choice.

Sould have provided more info. Budget isn't an issue, but not unlimited. More interested in quality. I will be hand holding. Thank you for the suggestions. I have been to lens review sites and find them difficult. Good to have insight from fellow photogs.

You might be able to use a monopod in your situation.

I have one in very good condition I would sell. I replaced it ith the Nikon 200-500. I thought my wife would use the Sigma but she hasn't, prefering her 18-300.

PM if interested.

I haven't put it out there yet so would check prices for sold ones on ebay.

You can rent a 200-500 and see how you like it. What you are calling a kit lens – 24-120 has quickly become one of my favorite walking around lenses.

Completely agree the lens is great and a good value paired with the purchase of the body.

Check the Nikon 70-300. Cheap and light. I own one, used on both D600 and D90. I am too old and frugal to want to buy and/or carry a 600mm.

Nice listing. Some might also add the Sigma 150-600 Sport.

Rent the Nikon 200-400 - or maybe get a used one.......where is this race located and what weather are you likely to experience ?? How serious are you about quality images ??

My son shoots Nascar professionally so he gets a lot closer in several spots than fans can ever hope to be able to get and he uses a crop sensor camera and the Tamron 150-600mm lens.
