The Sandia Peak, about an hour drive East from Albuquerque in the Sandia Mountains is the winter home for a large number of Rosy Finches. There is a snack/gift shop at the Sandia Peak, and there is a large feeder on the balcony. The feeder has an expected number of visitors year round, including the Steller's Jay and Mountain Chickadees. But in the winter there is a flock of Rosy Finches that feed on that balcony. The feeder went from empty to crammed with birds in about 5 seconds. After about 10 minutes of frenzied feeding, someone gave the signal and they were gone in a swirling mass just as fast as they came. These birds are like gems and every one is different. There are three species of Rosys, grey crowned, black Rosy Finch and Brown Capped Rosy Finch. So there's 6 different looks of the Rosys when you figure male and female, even more with juveniles. There are stunningly beautiful!! The feeding routine occurs about every hour or so. Note how many of these birds are banded in the photos. That really amazed me. If you have opportunity, don't miss this incredible display!

Wow Ralph!! That is very interesting to see. Thank you for sharing them with us!! Great shots!!!
These little birds can sure pick you up. excellent photos, sharp and nice composition
Thanks to each for your replies! Yes, birds do pick you up! They are so amazing! I wish I had taken some shots of the people watching them. A couple of groups, one group with a bird "guide"…all with their cameras and binoculars and bird books… Couldn't tell a republican from a democrat and all were just thrilled and chatty over the birds!
Great shots. Nice series.
A really good and informative set DirkWill, and being from the East not at all familiar with these birds. I surely agree about the excitement and pleasure felt on such occasions, as most of our lives we were pretty much home bodies, but even then it was a shock to see Evening Grosbeaks and recently a Baltimore Oriole, but were not mentally prepared for our first trip to Florida about four years ago! Thanks and take care!
