Hi all! I've been practicing my macro photography as I'm a photography newbie learning and learning. I find so much useful information here so thanks to everyone! My question today is this: Is there a considerable difference between using a macro lens and using extension tubes?

My bubble picture here was taken with a D750 and kit lens 24-120 f4 using two extension tubes. I find that the actual area of focus is tiny.... like maybe the size of a dime before it begins to drop off and get fuzzy. My aperture was f6.3 which I felt should have given me more dof and because I wasn't using a tripod, I had to keep my shutter speed at 1/100th (was at 92mm), ISO 1600. I certainly didn't want my ISO going any higher..... and it seems that the tubes introduce some noise.

Along the same lines here..... there are a few lenses I could choose from for Macro as far as I see it. The Nikon 105, Sigma 100, Tamron 90 or Tokina 100. I want one that has the rubber seal on the mount for sure.

Hogs! Help me please! Have a great day!

Thank you for posting this inspiring photo. It's been drab looking this winter, with little snow. Your photo makes me want to mount my macro lens on my camera with an extension tube or two. I think I might also bring an eyedropper full of water.

As others have mentioned extension tubes reduce the light making it to the sensor. There are many ways to compensate for this light lose, including a tripod and more time or a flash or two. I think you captured a drop of water in the process of freezing. Wonderful!

Edit:
I just reread your post and see that it a bubble! Did you use soap? How did you do that?!

Ya! It's a bubble:) I posted a link previously in this post to some bubble recipes. Most of them consist of varying amounts of water, dish soap and light corn syrup and/or glycerine. Mine is a mixture of all these. The glycerine helps the bubbles last quite some time, but too much of that and the syrup can render the bubble mixture useless for freezing.

Can you tell me what brand yours are? Is that allowed on the forum?
I own two sets (12mm, 20mm, & 36mm) Kenko auto-extension tubes, with absolutely no problems. Secure fit (no slop & easy to de-mount) and no internal metal surfaces (reduces unwanted reflections). Velco also makes a decent set of auto-tubes. Read more here: FAQ: Extension Tubes vs Bellows vs Tele-Extenders vs Add-on "Close-Up" Diopter Lenses at http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-26496-1.html

I just picked up the Tamron 90mm f2.8 (A017)! Joy! Now to get out and shoot! Oddly, this lens doesn't display f2.8.... the largest aperture I can set it to is f3.... I don't understand.

Excellent purchase! You will only focus wide open (f/2.8) so do not worry, as lens will automatically close-down at instant of exposure. At Minimum Focusing Distance, your DoF will be miniscule, even at f/16. Do you plan to shoot available light, or with diffused speedlight illumination?

To begin with, I'll be utilizing available light. I have a speedlight and can have that off camera even. There's so much to learn and am only part way through some of the helpful info at the macro forum:) I don't understand the Fstop from this macro though.....it's not like my other lenses so it's confusing me a little.

We all began with available light. What speedlight model do you have?

My speedlight is
Flashpoint Zoom Li-on R2 TTL (V860NII).

I haven't had any occasion to use it yet, but I will, I just know it! Lol

Interesting feature of this speedlight is that it does NOT use AA batteries, but uses a removable Li-Ion Polymer battery, and has its own power cord for recharging from a standard outlet. I cannot determine proper Guide Number for this unit, because manufacturer has rated it in a non-standard format. It looks like it will function quite nicely as an off-camera speedlight for diffused macro illumination. Camera + macro lens + speedlight means that you are 95% to a hand-held, field macro-photography set-up. Just a few 'companion components' to go: http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-32754-5.html#2585532

I would love to give this a try. I missed the earlier post with the bubble recipe can I ask for it again please?
