Hello. Here I am in my 60's and have never visited Oregon or Idaho. I have a new camera (Sony A7II) and would love input on "where to go, what to see" in Oregon and Idaho. I am planing an early Spring trip, flying into Portland, renting a car and driving east. Any suggestions would be very appreciated. Dave

If you're eastbound anyway, just follow the Columbia Gorge to the falls and other jaw-dropping scenes along the river. Just be sure your car has wind tires on it.

HI Dave,
If you land in portland, you are about 90 miles from Mt. St. Helens, an active volcano. Before heading east in Oregon, or maybe on your return trip through the Gorge, you can head up Interstate 5 to Castle Rock and go east for about 35 miles. They have about 4 visitors centers along the way. Great photo opportunities.

There is an Idaho Sawtooth loop from Boise to Garden Valley to Lowman to Stanley to Sun Valley to Twin Falls and back to boise. You will see truly spectacular country. The Payette river system, Red Fish Lake, the Sawtooth Mountains, Salmon River, shoshone falls, thousand springs just to name a few. In the spring if you cut through the camas prairie you may catch the camas flowers in bloom. Take your time and bring lots of image storage. Have a great trip.

Boy Dave you have a lot of ideas to sort through. I'm gonna add a few more. Haha
So head east out if Oregon through the gorge. Sorry I don't know much about Oregon. Head north as many others have recommended. Double back from northern Idaho to McCall then to Boise. There will be tons of photo ops so far. From Boise head to Twin Falls. Where you'll find the Snake River gorge. There is an area there were Evel Knievel tried to jump the gorge. From Twin Falls go to Burley, from Burley head to Pocatello. At Pocatello I would head south on I 15 about 30 miles. You'll go through Inkom, continue south until you come to Mccammon. You'll want to get off I 15 in Mccammon, head east to Lava Hot Springs. Try to spend the night there, Lava Suites is an awesome place to spend the night, talk to Julie she owns it. Eat at the chuckwagon owned by Mark. Spend the night before bed soaking in the natural hot pools. Talk to Jeannie or Donna that work there they're my cousins. The next morning I would head back to Pocatello. Continue past going north on I 15 towards Idaho Falls. Craters of the moon is up that way. When you get to Idaho Falls you want to get off I 15. The Snake River goes right through the middle of town. They have done some nice things along the river. The LDS Mormon Temple is on the river bank (I've posted a picture on here awhile back of the Temple). After Idaho Falls head north east to Rexburg. From there you can continue to Victor, Driggs west side of the Tetons. Palisades Lake, Jackson Wyoming is very close to there if you continue south east. If you have time head on up to Yellowstone. Go to West Yellowstone. North west of West Yellowstone head to Quake Lake. Quake Lake was formed by an earthquake. The resulting landslide buried a campground full of campers. Very ominous. Very eerie. Extremely interesting. I believe it would create some emotional photos. There's just so much to see you could spend a month there. Good luck enjoy southeastern Idaho if you make it there that's where I'm from and I miss it.

One thing you can't miss on this route is to stop at the Grant Teton Mountain and National Park. You can't miss the mountain as it can be seen as far away as Idaho Falls and Pocatello. There is a ski resort near the mountain and there are paths to walk up most of the Mountain with tons of scenic pictures on your drive to the mountain and your walk up the mountain. The park itself can use up weeks of vacation time to explore.

What are wind tires?

those tires have little openings in the tread that secrete glue so your car will not get blown off the road in the high winds of that area.

Just a figure of speech. That gorge is extremely windy much of the time. I've seen people lean into the wind at a 45 degree angle.

Guess you don't get to Idaho much. Bear Lake and City of Rocks are near the southern border. Craters of the Moon National Monument a little up in the southern part. And the southern part is capped by the Sawtooth National Recreation area: the most beautiful place in the world, not just Idaho.
Nothern Idaho is nice too...in particilar the big lakes.

No, I guess I don't get to Idaho much.... I was born there a little over 80 years ago, and know the state just a tiny bit. I agree about theSsawtooths, but don't really think of them as "southern," although definitely not "northern either." Wouldn't waste two seconds on Craters of the Moon...personal taste, I guess?
