Problems with Nikor 28-300 zoom lens and D3300 flash

I'm getting (twice now) funny results while trying to shoot with the built-in flash on a Nikon D3300 camera and the 3.5-5.6 Nikor zoom. Most of the time the flash doesn't go off. Shooting at 52mm F4.5, or 44mm F6.3 Aperture priority. Always works on 60mm Macro lens (F6.3), etc.

I did have the lens hood on. Acts like slow-rear? I checked, it's on fill flash.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Perhaps you’re focused beyond the flash range?

You need to Really, Really Look at your Manual for the 3300, the Booklet or Download on Line to Check for Troubleshoots on why Your Fill Flash Ain't Working Half the Time

Make sure you didn't accidently set the flash (in the menu) to control external flashes only. If it is set that way, it is just sending instructions to any Nikon external speedlights that it thinks you're using and the onboard flash isn't participating in the exposure. You might try a full camera reset to make sure you didn't accidently set something you didn't intend to. BE AWARE that a full camera reset will do away with any custom setting that you've created in the camera.

Um... just a thought ... is your very large FX lens and hood blocking the tiny flash on the front of your wonderfully small DX camera?

Maybe it is going off and just not getting out to the image.

Nothing about external only flash in D3300 (that I know of). It can't send commands.

I'm thinking the lens hood has something to do with it. I'm on vacation (and I can use another lens). I'll try some experiments when we get home. It acted like it was flashing sometimes.

Thanks for the replies.
