As GEEPOPS said, you have to turn the flash on in the settings. What messed me up was that I HAD turned it on. The "problem" is that when you remove the WR-10 for storage, the circuit is broken and the menu item is "grayed out". When the WR-10 in re-installed, the menu item returns to normal and it looks like you are ready to go. Nope, once the circuit was broken, even though it returns when the WR-10 is installed, the "Flash Control" in the "Photo Shooting Menu" is now turned "OFF" and must be turned back "ON". I hadn't realized that once "ON" it didn't stay "ON" like most any other switch. And the manual doesn't say anything about this "feature". Thanks GEEPOPS.

You go into your profile, find your posts, open and reply.
I'm following this thread and have 2 SB 5000's still in the box.
Thanks for starting it.

As GEEPOPS said, you have to turn the flash on in ... (show quote)

Nikon does not seem consistent on things that reset when you turn off the camera and may not be thorough on telling you that. I also feel they aren't consistent across camera models (but haven't verified that story).o

Then there are the things that have switches (e.g. VR) that I forget to turn off or on.
