While snow might be covering the ground, it is prime time for your mailbox to be stuffed with seed and plant catalogs. One interesting plant that I ordered and enjoyed for years was a native herb named VIRGINIA SPIDERWORT. It is also known as LADY'S TEARS. I always kept mine planted in a large pot buried in the ground out by the mailbox. This plant is happiest in bog-like conditions which do not exist in my yard...burying the pot helps to retain moisture. It only grows to a height of just over a foot and bears blooms beginning in fairly early spring...the foliage resembles those of the Gladioli. Individual blooms only last about one day but the bush remains covered in blooms. I would like to share a few of the blooms of mine with you.

Beautiful flower, color and shots, Bob and thanks for that info. I never plant from seeds and usually buy a few perennials each year and repot them into bigger pots.
I can't wait to see the rebirth of spring!!
Beautiful series Bob. They grow wild here and I have always loved them!

Bob, excellent series.
The advice on the catalogs is also dead on. I need to order some for myself, thank you.

Beautiful images ,Bob, but first I need a new mailbox, as I backed over ours during the snowstorm!

Thanks Carol! Some of our native plants equal any of the exotic cultivated ones!

Greg, at my age, I am not enough of an optimist to plant seeds...reality convinces me that I better buy plants, and preferably, ones that are in bloom!
Hope this rapid warm spell gets rid of your snow!
