Cibolo is fantastic! I spent 5 days there in September and I am scheduled for next September. I was talking today about doing a 2 or 3 day tweeter in the next few weeks.

Big Bend is a great place to visit. I'd suggest staying a night in Marathon at the Gage Hotel. After leaving the park, we stayed at the Cibolo Creek Ranch - a bit pricey, but well worth it - especially the tour of the old forts. Another great little town is Marfa which was the subject of a 60 minutes piece a few years ago. Here are a few links to some of my photos from our trip. Have fun!

Aren't those the ones that were in the movie Contact? Can you get in or do you have to view them from the road? Pie Town is right down the road from there too.....it was on Sunday Morning some time ago.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the VLA was featured in that movie. It's been a few years since I visited there, so the details are a bit fuzzy. I didn't enter any of the actual telescope 'machines' - just toured the visitors center and the public areas. I don't recall how close we could approach the machine, either. They are HUGE! perhaps as tall - or taller - than a 10 storey building and the site covers miles & miles of desert. I'm sure GOOGLE has tons of more information.

Didn't know about Pie Town when I was there.

I am headed to the "Hill Country" of Texas early April to hopefully photograph some of the blooming bluebonnets and other wildflowers, then down to Big Bend NP and over to NM for Carlsbad and White Sands. I will have 3 weeks for this trip and have a lot of ground to cover, but if there is anyone in the area that is up for some "shoot" time, I would love to meet you. Also, if you have any "cannot miss" places, please let me know.

Yay--you have great destinations on your travel agenda! I'll enjoy seeing the 'must do' list that other members share with you. Looks like lots of wonderful tips so far. Don't think I'll ever get there so I'll be looking forward to your travel photos. Hope all the plans come together for a great trip.

You should see miles of them along I-10 if you travel that way, but stopping to take pics may be a problem. Also, wherever you are do NOT pick the Blue Bonnets - they are protected by law and it's a finable offence to pick them.
