I just completed a photo and slide scanning project. The scanning of the slides was very slow. 4 slides per scan took approximately 3 minutes. The loading and unloading the slides also takes time. For some reason I noticed more smudges on the flat bed screen when working with slides. Spent a good amount of time cleaning glass. I did not have this issue when scanning photos.
As mentioned before a process to choose just the best slides would have saved me time and effort. My slides are family snapshots from years past. I scanned every slide just to have a complete set.
Early in the scan process I had a sample of the scanned slides professional printed. I am overall pleased with the quality of most of the older slides. For $150 you can get a decent Epson scanner. Do you have the time?

I think some on this site need to learn to be more respectful. I am tired of reading responses that say "if only you did more research or searched this site" or "this topic has been discussed before". I say so what. Some are asking for a little help or need some guidance. They don't need a smart ass reply. I have searched this site for answers and have found some that I know are absolutely wrong and some dated a long time past. Maybe some questions just need to be updated. My Dad use to say " it is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to open you mouth and remove any doubt"! So I say, unless you have some help, pointers or "constructive" criticism to offer, please do not hit "reply". I have also read replies that chastised misspelled words. Again, I say show some respect or get off this site!

Mr. Boo,
Thank you for the detailed answer. I'm leaning toward using a lab (found one locally) for the time savings and because I don't have a huge number of slides, so would probably not need the scanner again.
Thanks again...

I like a dedicated scanner. Mine is old but does 35mm film, slides and 5 x 7 pictures. The result was outstanding. Stick with a name brand. There are great ones out there.

Also a bellows rig with slide viewer attachment to take a high res picture of your slides --> your digital camera. See here for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh8vJCvsZtY
There are many models, and several I see are not expensive. Besides other devices, and private sources, you might consider this option since it seems pretty cost effective if you have a lot of slides.

Again, another rude response.

Why can't these people sit on their fingers instead of being self-appointed UHH Stasi?

I've become reluctant to ask something—even after I've searched—because of a few members.

Yeah. Moderation is a bit loose here, and so you do get some trolls. But 99.9% of us are solidly all for being nice.
