Other than price, does anyone know the difference between these two units?

Please focus on the specific question asked. Not interested in generic digressions or other TCs etc. at this point.

My intention is to use it with AF-S zoom lenses on a D5300 and D800. Lenses include Nikon 55-300, 28-300, and 200-500 and maybe Sigma 150-500.

Isn't the MC4 for Sony cameras? Disregard. It has a Nikon mount as well.

Maybe this web page will help.

"KENKO Teleplus Pro 300 DGX converters are made with precision quality multi-coated optical glass supplied by Hoya Corporation, the worlds largest manufacturer of optical glass."

That seems to be the difference. The other TC is made from glass swept from the road after a traffic accident - or maybe not.

The way I read it is that the Pro 300 is for prime lenses not zoom lenses.

Remember the old Sears catalogue? Good, better, best. The Pro 300 is Kenko's "best" line. I have the 1.4x and 2.0x for Canon. I use them for everything but my 100-400L, that one has the Canon 1.4X III that has a pretty short list of lenses it will fit.

The MC4, 1.4X is for the Sony A-mount cameras. The Pro 300DGX 1.4X is the Nikon F mount cameras. Price from between about $100-$140. Can be purchased from B&H.

Kenko discontinued teleconverters for Sony, they now make only Canon and Nikon. You would have to search for Sony mounts versions, used or old stock.

Poor Sony. They discontinued the Sony a58 DSLT camera too. No respect. Now we know how Rodney Dangerfield felt.

If my memory serves me right- the Pro 300 Teleplus has 7 lens elements in 4 groups, and will be optically better than the MC4, which has 4 lens elements in 4 groups.

The Pro has 5 elements vs 4 for the MC4, and the elements are bigger in the Pro. Although, I have seen a formal testing showing the MC4 to have better resolution with a Canon 70-200 zoom.

Thanks for a good link.

The difference isn't jumping out at me. Although one says it is for prime lenses it goes on to say it is good for zooms above 50mm.

I'll print and do a detailed compare of the writeups and specs to see if that tells me the difference.

Seems like there should be a significant difference to justify two products for the same function.

It goes on to say it is for zoom lenses above 50mm.

That might mean it won't work with the 28-300 but might work with my other lenses.

I want to be sure on this as I bought a Nikon one from KEH a while back only to find it wouldn't work with either my Nikon 28-300 or my Sigma 150-500, the latter due to a mechanical interference. KEH (reluctantly) took it back.

I'm not concerned anout the small price differences in the Kenko converters but want the best one and don't want to have to return.

According to what I read the Teleplus MC4 series are for the older AF D lenses and not the newer lenses with the focus motor in them leading me to believe that the AF-S lenses will be manual focus only.
