Little by little, one by one, we're seeing pieces of what makes New York so special disappear. In Dec of 2014 after 110 years, De Robertis, one of the last great pasticcerie in the city closed. Tuesday of last week, what had been one of my favorite restaurants, Da Silvano closed, ending forty one years of serving wonderful Italian food. A couple of months ago it was the Four Seasons that closed. And now it's Carnegie. Before long it will be nothing but chain restaurants and the crap they sell.

I hope it does not come to that. in My visits to New York for work I loved finding these places to eat.

Today is the final day of the Carnegie Deli. This institution is closing. One of the best delicatessens in the world is gone. For those of us who have eaten there it is a sad day indeed.

Doesnt suprise me. Eat there in July. Long lines, and good corned beef on rye. But, unionized service was lousy. Chesse cake second rate, and overall energy of the atmosphere was dead. Food way Over priced. Once was enough.

Remember what happened to Mama Leone's? It got turned into a small, bright eatery. That was a shame.

Here is an opinion (which I share) that I found concerning Mama Leone's: " The Leone family sold the restaurant to a large conglomerate in 1959; the new owners kept the name. They finally closed for good more than ten years ago.

Anyone remember Mama Leone's - very mediocre food, but the portions were tremendous and they gave you things to take home, like cheeses and breads. It was a fun place, even though the food wasn't that good."

Not a big fan. We sometimes had them cater our edit session when working late and the food was just so so. I did like the breakfast platter they sent up when working on a morning show. The cheese Danish was the best I've ever had.

The new version of Mama Leone's is Carmine's, which seems to be beloved by tourists. Yuck! Tony's de Napoli is a cut above but that's not saying much. If you want a classic red sauce Italian meal in NY try Il Vagabondo. The down side for tourists is it isn't in Times Square and it's cash only.

Ate there once about three years ago. Someone told me to order only a single sandwich and order of fries to split between my friend and myself. We ordered a sandwich apiece but only one order of fries. One sandwich would have been enough but we both were able to mussel them down. If memory serves though, there were a few fries left! We have a branch of the Deli here in the Lehigh Valley but I have not tried it. At the time it opened in the Sands Casino it was the only one beside the original. It most likely wouldn't appeal to me since it would not have the ambiance of the one in NYC.
