These last two alternatives that amplify the split lighting effect, and that virtually hide half the body, improve the sense of the image considerably (IMO). Gone is much of the ambiguity in the idea behind the image, because the whole body (meaning its entirety) now counts for less, the position of the head counts for more, and this now becomes art through photography, i.e. more than just artful photography. To me, this is a more expressive version of the image than the original. Either crop works.

I like more neg space, but I'd split the difference. Thanx!

I shot this with my 70-200 F2.8 lens on my 5DMark 3 I used 2 strobes at either side of the model - I like the image but don't love it, I think it lacks strong contrast with the highlights and shadows, how could I have improved?

Its all about lighting and placement . With the light at a 90 degree angle, to the camera, you get a very powerful contrast. with that in mind adding some light to those areas that lack detail in the dark areas .. Consider the pose it doesn't say much. Tell a story with the pose! Add a prop, such as a hat, boxing glove.. etc.
Play more with the lighting in a dark room using the modeling lights to position the shadows exactly where you want them to be.

Why does her hands (from the wrist down) look like they are not hers? Look at the download, magnified.

I see what you are asking, i do think the light placement could be improved. The light isnt raking across the muscles enough.

A little move of the light goes a long way.

Did you flag or snoot the lights?

Personally, I'm not a fan of "amputated" limbs. Also prefer this as a vertical orientation. JMHO
